Description
Two internship positions are available to help with sea turtle nest monitoring and egg relocation associated with a beach renourishment project on Captiva Island, FL. The interns will be responsible for monitoring the beach in search of nesting sea turtles and relocating nests laid within the project zone. Work schedule may require daytime and/or nighttime hours as needed based on project demands.
Successful candidates must be able to work closely with other interns, a large group of volunteers, and contractors. Previous experience conducting morning sea turtle nesting surveys and nest relocation preferred but not required. Surveys will be conducted 7 days per week and weekend/holiday work will be required. The intern will have 2 nights off per week. Housing will be provided.
Required qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree and related experience working outdoors
- Ability and desire to work long hours with an irregular schedule
- Ability to work under adverse conditions (biting insects, rain)
- Ability to work independently to accomplish set goals and as part of a team
- Ability to maintain a positive attitude and sense of humor
- A valid US driver’s license
- SCCF is a drug-free workplace and the successful applicant will take a drug screening within 2 weeks of starting the position
Desired qualifications:
- Previous experience conducting morning and nighttime sea turtle surveys
- Previous experience verifying egg chambers and relocating sea turtle nests
- Experience driving ATVs and UTVs
- Experience with public outreach
Work environment & physical demands:
- This position works nightly in outdoor subtropical conditions of Southwest Florida
- Ability to sit or stand for long periods of time, may require walking for significant distances throughout the day
- Reaching above shoulder height, below the waist or lifting up to forty (40) pounds, as required throughout the work day; proper lifting techniques required
