Backwater slough wetlands in the Central Platte River Valley (CPRV) have experienced substantial loss and degradation due to hydrologic alteration of the Platte River.  These unique wetlands provide critical ecosystem services such as nutrient and sediment retention, flood attenuation, and habitat for diverse aquatic communities.  Given their importance, there has been considerable efforts to restore and recreate backwater sloughs in the CPRV, and it is critical that we are able assess the condition of these wetlands, determine the degree to which restored backwater sloughs parallel the structure and function of native backwater sloughs, and evaluate the role restoration techniques play in influencing the condition of these wetlands.  The objectives of this project are to develop a standardized, multi-metric framework for evaluating ecological trajectories and establish benchmarks of success for backwater slough restorations.  Primary tasks include: (1) selecting and classifying slough sites across gradients of restoration age, design, degradation, and hydrologic connectivity; (2) collecting biological (amphibians, fish, macroinvertebrates, and vegetation) and environmental (water and habitat quality) data from restored, degraded, and reference sloughs; (3) evaluating ecological trajectories and developing process-based benchmarks for restoration success; (4) assessing the influence of restoration design and hydrologic connectivity on outcomes; and (5) developing guidance for evaluating and improving restoration efforts.  This project provides a great opportunity to work with a variety of NGO’s as well as state and federal agencies involved with conservation efforts on the Platte River.   Anticipated start date is 1 January 2027.  

 

Stipend: $30,000 per year, non-resident and resident tuition waiver, and OSU insurance provided.  During field season, field housing, research vehicle, and technician support will be provided.  

 

Qualifications:  B.S. and M.S. in Wildlife Ecology, Biology, Environmental Science, Natural Resources, or related disciplines.  Experience with ecological modeling preferred.
