Description
We are seeking two (2) technicians to assist with a project focusing on wild turkey reproductive ecology. Field work is expected to start January 4, 2025 and run through July 31, 2025 though these dates can be flexible. The project will specifically focus on chronology of turkey gobbling, turkey movements, space use, nesting, and brood rearing in relationship to hunting on the landscape. The role of the technician will be assisting with turkey trapping, radio-telemetry, habitat sampling, acoustic surveying, necropsies, and data recording and processing. To accomplish these tasks, technicians will work both independently and as part of a small crew. Hours are irregular and technicians will be expected to work long days throughout the week, with limited time off in the early part of the field season. Overtime pay is not available. Housing and vehicles for field work will be provided. The research will be conducted on two study sites: B. F. Grant Memorial Forest and Cedar Creek WMA in the Piedmont region of central Georgia. Athens (home of the University of Georgia) is roughly an hour away, and Atlanta is 1-2 hours away.
Qualifications: Preference will be given to applicants that have a B.S. in wildlife ecology or related field. Competitive candidates will be expected to: (1) Have previous field experience that includes animal capture and tagging. (2) Have previous experience with radio telemetry and wildlife tracking. (3) Have strong interpersonal skills as daily interaction with landowners, hunters, state agency personnel, and other stake holders will occur. (4) Work early mornings, late nights and weekends when necessary. (5) Have experience operating 4-wd vehicles and ATV's. (6) Have experience with vegetation sampling and surveys. (7) Have experience with climbing tree stands and do not have a fear of heights.
To Apply: Applicants should send via email a single .pdf document (with the subject line titled: Wild Turkey Tech) containing a cover letter that details interest and qualifications for the project, a resume/CV, as well as contact information for 3 references. Applications will be reviewed as they are received. Applications should be sent in a single email to both listed contacts.
