Description
The Wildlife Care Internship Program at the Center for Wildlife is an unpaid learning experience for individuals interested in wildlife. These positions can serve as an exciting pathway into wildlife career opportunities. Past interns have majored in Biology, Zoology, Wildlife Ecology or Management, or Environmental Science. Others already have a degree and are looking for more experience in the field. In some cases, you may be eligible to receive college credit for your internship. Being a current college student or having a degree is not required - we welcome non-traditional interns!

Interns provide valuable support to clinic staff while working alongside our team of wildlife rehabilitation apprentices and volunteers. This teamwork allows us to provide our sick, injured, and orphaned wild animal patients the highest quality care. Individuals selected will be encouraged to participate in many aspects of wildlife rehabilitation from cleaning, feeding, cage set-up and maintenance to close observation, treatment, and release of animals. Interns also receive valuable experience in learning how to safely handle wild animals, raising orphaned birds and mammals, and understanding the current challenges wildlife in our community face. Center for Wildlife’s internships include access to many resources and training, including our memberships, library, and in-house workshops.

Interns are expected to work alongside our clinic staff, apprentices, and volunteers. Volunteers and interns work together during shifts to help support staff in animal care and daily operations. Many of our volunteers have been with us for a long time and have a diverse background of experience and knowledge.

We require full-time interns to work 40 hours per week in five 8-hour shifts with two consecutive days off, and part-time interns to work a minimum of 24-hours with schedules set based on availability and clinic needs. Due to the 24/7 nature of this work, interns will be required to work some early morning, late evening, and weekend shifts. There is mandatory training and workshops the first week of the internship and we ask that schedules remain open for this time.

To apply, please submit the following:
A cover letter, resume, and three professional references to intern@thecenterforwildlife.org

Description
How to Apply:
Please complete the Google Form here.

You will be working with biologists, park rangers, and other interns in a 25,000 hectare nature reserve in the lowveld area of South Africa. This area houses immense biodiversity and your internship will focus on the ecology and management of organisms on this reserve such as elephants, lions, hyenas and leopards. In addition, breeding initiatives on buffalo, Livingston eland and nyala are underway at this location.

The main research camp offers you a unique experience in the African bush and gives you the opportunity to be a part of the research and monitoring teams on the reserve, working as an assistant Field Ranger.

The focus of the project revolves around some of our key species; elephants, lions, hyenas and leopards. You will also be involved with monitoring our breeding of buffalo and their release into the open system. Habitat work also plays an important part of the monitoring process.

This Big 5 nature reserve is the home of nature conservation in South Africa and your work is vital for accurate management of the animals within the reserve. The data collected is also made available to students and researchers that we host, as well as a number of national conservation projects, including the Endangered Wildlife Trust (EWT).

Whether on a monitoring drive, on foot, or observing the wildlife at a waterhole, all of your work will be done under the guidance of our experienced field rangers. As each activity has a pre-determined objective, you don’t just get to view the animals, you get to live with them for a little while.

There’s nothing quite like sitting in the dark next to a lazing lion waiting for it to start its nightly call, or being surrounded by a herd of elephants and being able to spend time observing their individual traits and family dynamics.

At the end of the day, you return to the camp to share your experiences over dinner around the open fire and then fall asleep to the sounds of the bush. Join us for the experience of a lifetime!

Housing:
The Main Camp has:
  • Electricity and hot running water (solar panels: on overcast days it can sometimes run out).
  • Internet / WIFI
  • Reasonable cell reception at camp. You can easily buy a South-African SIM card (MTN is best) at the airport or in Hoedspruit.
  • Comfortable lounge area: library with books and magazines, TV, DVD players.
  • Swimming Pool

ABOUT DUNES LEARNING CENTER
With a mission to inspire lasting curiosity and stewardship with nature, Dunes
Learning Center is the nonprofit education partner of Indiana Dunes National Park.
Since 1998, more than 175,000 students from diverse communities and backgrounds have participated in our programs to discover, learn, explore, and reflect on the science and wonder of nature. For many, Dunes Learning Center is the gateway to Indiana Dunes National Park and the beginning of their environmental science education.  These experiences support students on the pathway to science-based careers, inspiring the next generation of scientists, environmental advocates, and educators.

Looking back on 25 years of exploration and investigation in nature's classroom, Dunes Learning Center is proud to be at the forefront of environmental education in the Indiana Dunes.  We serve a diverse community and seek a diverse workforce.  Dunes Learning Center is an equal opportunity provider and does not discriminate.

SUMMARY
Dunes Learning Center is proud to carry on a tradition of learning in the dunes that dates back more than 100 years ago by the “Father of Ecology in North America,” Dr. Henry Chandler Cowles. Outreach Education Fellows are key members of the Dunes Learning Center team who deliver programs online, in schools, and natural areas providing meaningful experiences to over 5,000 students in Northwest Indiana.  They help students create connections, build confidence, and develop a sense of place by providing opportunities to explore, ask questions, reflect and work together as a team.

Our Outreach Education Fellowship provides an opportunity for next generation leaders to receive training and coaching to develop their naturalist, outdoor education, and resource interpretation skills and techniques. Fellows work both as a team and independently to lead a variety of programs to a wide audience in diverse settings, often working closely with public school systems and partners throughout the year.  In the summer, the outreach team leads day-camps based at Indiana Dunes National Park’s historic Chellberg Farm and assists with residential camps.  Outreach Education Fellows have opportunities to extend their professional development through workshops, in-services, and networking.

Description
Would you like to live in the middle of the Amazon rainforest as part of a fantastic multicultural team while helping to preserve wild macaws? Add to that learning a new set of skills and gaining great field experience at one of the longest-running parrot projects in the Americas? If this sounds good to you, come and join our team of dedicated volunteers!

For over two decades, we’ve been working in the lowlands of southeastern Peru, led by Drs. Brightsmith and Vigo-Trauco from Texas A&M’s Schubot Center for Avian Health. Our research focuses on the breeding ecology of wild parrots and macaws in Tambopata, a region critical to conservation since 1999.

Volunteers are the backbone of our work, contributing thousands of hours to understanding these incredible birds. Whether you’re passionate about wildlife, have a background in biology, or are just eager to gain field experience, we welcome you to be part of this rewarding journey.

With various programs designed for all experience levels—from birdwatching enthusiasts to graduate-level professionals—there’s an opportunity for everyone who’s responsible, enthusiastic, and ready for an adventure in conservation. Are you ready for a hands-on conservation experience in one of the most biodiverse places on Earth? Come join us in making a real difference!

We have different volunteer assistantships programs that require different levels of experience from amateur enthusiasts and birdwatchers to graduate-level professionals. Volunteer activities vary according to the position.

LONG TERM VOLUNTEER ASSISTANT

Join our team and be trained to identify all local parrots by sight and sound. You’ll conduct parrot censuses in the forest and at clay licks, locate foraging parrots, and enter collected data into our system. During the macaw breeding season, you’ll learn to climb trees using rope systems and observe macaw behavior around nests. Additional duties include campsite setup and cooking.

SHORT VOLUNTEER ASSISTANT

In this role, you will receive quick training to assist our field team in monitoring macaw nests from the ground, supporting the team that works with ropes. You will also be trained to monitor macaw behavior around nests and help with clay lick observations. Due to the shorter stay, involvement in activities like parrot censuses and tree climbing will be limited. Other responsibilities include campsite setup and cooking.

SPONSORED LONG TERM VOLUNTEER POSITION

Be part of the “Harrison's Bird Foods Internship in the Rainforest Program”! You will receive comprehensive training similar to our long-term volunteers, including parrot identification, conducting censuses, monitoring foraging behaviors, tracking tree species macaws use, and entering data. In addition to tree climbing and nest observation, you’ll also assist with macaw chick health checks, including taking biometric measurements. You’ll play a key role in our nest monitoring expeditions throughout the Tambopata River basin. As with all positions, activities include campsite setup and cooking.
