The Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife (MDIFW) is currently recruiting applicants for (1) Wildlife Technician position at Swan Island (Steve Powell Wildlife Management Area (WMA)) for the 2025 season.
Swan Island is located at the head of Merrymeeting Bay on the Kennebec River, adjacent to the towns of Richmond and Dresden. This WMA welcomes hikers, campers, birders, anglers, wildlife watchers and explorers to its shores for an unforgettable Maine experience.
Duties:
These positions are within the Wildlife Division and are supervised by the regional wildlife biologist. They provide technicians with practical wildlife management experience and public interactions and interpretation in a busy wildlife management area.
Technicians will perform a wide variety of wildlife habitat work, interact with visitors, and perform custodial functions on the island. You must be prepared to represent MDIFW in a positive way. Enthusiasm for MDIFW’s mission and an appreciation of Maine’s natural and cultural heritage are a definite plus. Schedules will be 40 hours per week, likely Wednesday thru Sunday. Start time will vary throughout the season due to seasonal surveys and responsibilities.
Duties include but are not limited to:
• Transporting equipment across the Kennebec River via watercraft,
• Assisting in wildlife surveys (bio-acoustic surveys, breeding surveys, banding efforts, etc.)
• Assisting with island maintenance projects (i.e. using chainsaws, mowers, heavy equipment, herbicide application, etc.)
• Interacting with public visitors
• Maintaining the campground, trails, and other island facilities,
• Minor repairs to equipment and facilities,
• Habitat management activities such as mowing of fields with a tractor.
Motivated candidates will have the opportunity to assist in developing new projects in cooperation with the Swan Island manager. The purpose of these projects will be to benefit the local wildlife and recreation for visitors. Some examples of small and ongoing projects are trail maintenance; birdhouse installation and maintenance; wildlife surveys, etc. The technicians will have an opportunity to become familiar with MDIFW and its activities and occasionally join other staff on fieldwork.
Qualifications:
Applicants must have the ability to perform the physical duties of the position including being able to work in all kinds of weather, over different types of terrain, and with ticks and other biting insects. Applicants must be able to work with minimal supervision, be very independent and easy-going, be able to work with the public of all ages in a professional manner and possess a valid U. S. driver’s license with a clean record. Previous experience with environmental field work, wildlife identification and work in a field camp setting is preferred.
