Greater Sage-Grouse Technicians - Wyoming and Montana

Description

One research technician position is available to collect field data on greater sage-grouse in Wyoming. The purpose of this study is to understand the effect of wind energy on sage-grouse populations. The technician will be stationed at and near the proposed Jackalope Wind Facility near Point of Rocks, Wyoming, and the position will last through August 15th.

Responsibilities

  • Locating greater sage-grouse using UHF and VHF radio telemetry
  • Monitoring nests and conducting nighttime brood counts
  • Performing mammalian camera trap surveys
  • Capturing and handling adult and juvenile grouse in July and August
  • Conducting raptor and raven point count surveys
  • Conducting vegetation surveys to monitor feral horse sage-grouse interactions

Technicians will work as employees of the University of Wyoming and will collaborate closely with:

  • Two graduate students (University of Wyoming)
  • Dr. Jeff Beck (Principal Investigator, University of Wyoming)
  • Bureau of Land Management biologists
  • Industry personnel and private landowners
  • Research biologists from WEST Inc. (Laramie, WY)
  • A Sutton Avian Research Center biologist (Bartlesville, OK)

Technicians, including an M.S. student, will work as a team to monitor the reproductive success and movement patterns of greater sage-grouse across a large landscape dominated by big sagebrush. Shared housing will be provided in trailers with running water, electricity, and heating/AC.

Qualifications

Experience working with prairie grouse is preferred, but not required. Applicants must be able to work safely and effectively in remote field conditions with minimal supervision.

Key qualifications include:

  • Proficiency in operating ATVs/UTVs and 4WD trucks with trailers
  • Ability to navigate using maps and GPS
  • Willingness to hike moderate distances and work long, irregular hours (including nights) (>40/week)
  • Experience in radio telemetry (preferred but not required)
  • Ability to live and work harmoniously with co-workers in shared housing
  • Familiarity with identifying potential mammalian and avian predators of sage-grouse
