Description
The Flying A Ranch is looking for eager Wildlife / Range (or other closely related fields of study) students to assist our on-site biologists and staff during the Summer. The ranch is a 9,000 acre hunting ranch, with a habitat first approach to management. The Flying A Ranch is located in the Edwards Plateau ecoregion near Bandera Texas. 5,000 acres of the ranch is devoted to native wildlife. The primary focus being quality white-tailed deer and excellent habitat for other native species. We use various tools to help both white-tailed deer and other native species. Examples: short duration cattle grazing, juniper control, chemical application on non-desirable plants etc. The remainder of the property has breeding populations of many different exotic ungulate species. (axis, fallow, aoudad, kudu, wildebeest etc.) Interns will assist full time employees on infrastructure maintenance as well as habitat manipulation and management. Interns will reside on the ranch in a furnished house, with ranch trucks provided.
Intern duties include but are not limited to the following.
Ashe juniper control via skid-steer
Chemical application to undesirable plant species
Filling free choice deer feeders
Assist in road repair
Limited tractor work
Feral pig trapping
Raccoon trapping
Burning brush piles if weather permits
Keep intern house clean and tidy
General ranch maintenance
All applicants must have at least 60 hours completed in a wildlife related field of study. Applicants should be eager, hardworking, and able to work alone or in small groups. Please include a cover letter, resume, transcript and reference list via email. Interns start mid-May and conclude mid-August. (Dates are slightly flexible due to school schedules.) The positions will be filled as soon as qualified applicants are received. The internship may be lengthened if mutually agreed upon with the intern and ranch staff. (We also have a fall hunting guide internships posted so please state if you are interested in Summer only or both internships.)
