Job Description:

These positions will aid Colorado Parks and Wildlife Aquatic Research Staff in conducting research on native, non-game fishes. Seeking both a crew-lead with directly applicable field and leadership experience, and a technician with applicable experience or the desire and ability to learn quickly and excel under supervision. Main species of focus are bluehead and flannelmouth sucker, and roundtail chub. Successful candidates will participate in electrofishing and netting surveys, hybrid sucker identification, using PIT technology, larval fish and egg collection, data management, and equipment maintenance. All employees should be prepared to participate in all tasks and should be comfortable working outdoors in both hot and cold conditions, wading in relatively deep and swift water, carrying up to 50 lbs for short distances, and following detailed procedures consistently and effectively. Work hours are likely to be variable with some night work and potential weekend/holiday work. 40 hour work weeks will be the norm, with some opportunities for overtime. Some overnight travel is required.

 

Specific Duties May Include:

·       Wading in flowing water.

·       Handling and identifying fish to species; checking fish for PIT-tags and PIT-tagging fish; collecting accurate data on fish handled.

·       Backpack, boat, and bank electrofishing.

·       PIT tagging, PIT tag antenna deployment and maintenance.

·       Larval fish sampling with drift nets and dip nets.

·       Collecting and cataloging tissue samples from fish for genetic analysis.

·       Data entry and validation.

 

REQUIREMENTS:

·       Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license.

·       Preference will be given to those possessing or working on a B.S. degree in fisheries, wildlife, biology, zoology, ecology, or closely related field.

·       Previous experience with fish identification is preferred. 

·       Must be able to work days and occasional nights, occasionally on weekends and holidays.

·       Must be able to work outdoors in a variety of weather and temperature conditions.

·       Must be able to wade deep and fast waters.

·       Must be able to carry 50lbs for short distances.

·       An interest in fish conservation and a career in biological sciences is preferred.
