NYS Department of Environmental Conservation, Region 2 (New York City) is seeking applicants for two seasonal wildlife technician positions beginning around May and ending in November. Start and end dates are flexible. These positions are largely field-oriented, applicants should be comfortable working in coastal marsh, silt flat, and wetland terrain. Limited work-from-home ability may be available depending on work assignments.

Position 1 - Monitor Peregrine falcon eyeries and obtain recruitment data throughout the breeding season. Conduct point-count surveys for grassland bird inventories. Establish and maintain acoustic bat detectors throughout the region. Assist in breeding colonial waterbird counts. Aid in establishing waterfowl banding sites and in pre-season banding of mallards and American black ducks.

Position 2- The field technician will be a part of a team working on population monitoring and habitat/life history description for the Atlantic Coast Leopard Frog (Lithobates [Rana] kauffeldi) to meet the goals of NYSDEC’s State Wildlife Action Plan. Duties of this technician include installation and maintenance of automated audio recording systems, identifying frog calls from recordings, capturing frogs and fitting them with radio transmitters, tracking frogs using radio telemetry, habitat assessment via water and vegetation sampling, data entry and organization, and other duties as deemed necessary. Work will take place in wetlands and require navigation through muddy terrain with thick vegetation. The technician must be able to work in rain and windy conditions. Other wildlife surveying may be required.
