Description
Description: The Davis Herpetology Lab (https://drewrdavis.com) in the Department of Biology at Eastern New Mexico University is accepting applications for an undergraduate student technician to assist with several herpetological research projects being conducted in Summer 2025 across New Mexico, USA. Projects include: 1) conducting surveys for the state-threatened Western Ribbonsnake across eastern New Mexico; 2) conducting eDNA-based surveys and habitat assessments for the Plain-bellied Watersnake and Mexican Gartersnake; and 3) conducting eDNA-based and trapping surveys for Rio Grande Cooters in New Mexico and Texas. Individuals would begin fieldwork mid-May and work through mid-August 2025 (exact dates are flexible). The technician hired would work closely with the PI and graduate students to collect the necessary data to accomplish specific project objectives. Generally, the technician would participate in fieldwork where they would help conduct surveys for target species, record habitat and water quality data, and collect eDNA samples and voucher specimens. Fieldwork will primarily occur along the Pecos and Canadian rivers throughout eastern New Mexico and the Gila National Forest region in western New Mexico and will consist of several-day-long outings where multiple sites are visited/sampled. Crews will be camping during surveys and applicants should be comfortable and capable conducting field research. Opportunities to develop related projects while participating in this fieldwork are possible.
Qualifications: Current enrollment in a B.S. program majoring in Biology, Wildlife Ecology, or a similar degree, with strong academic credentials, is required. Applicants should be highly motivated to work on these projects, able to work with a team, and capable of conducting fieldwork under challenging conditions. Students must also hold a valid driver’s license and have a safe driving record. The applicant should display characteristics of success, including a strong work ethic, organizational and planning skills, grit, and excellent communication, as well as be able to work in a team setting. Competitive applicants are those that have experience conducting field studies in aquatic habitats (preferably with snakes, turtles, or eDNA) and who have a strong interest in herpetological research.
About ENMU and Portales: Eastern New Mexico University is federally designated Hispanic-Serving Institution situated in Portales, New Mexico, a small, friendly town with an affordable cost of living. How to Apply: Interested applicants should send an email describing your interest in this position and include a copy of your CV and contact information for two references to drew.davis@enmu.edu (subject line = DHL technician position). Applications will be reviewed as they are received. Full consideration will be given to all applications received before 20 April 2025.
