Description
POSITION:   Fisheries Technician: Seasonal/ Temporary
                      
START & END DATE:  May – November, with potential extension through winter
 
PAY RATE:  $18.00 - $20.00 / hour, depending on experience and education
 
LOCATION:  Grand Junction, Colorado

JOB DESCRIPTION:   Successful applicant will work as a member of a fishery inventory crew to collect fishery information in the Grand Junction area and throughout Northwest Colorado as needed.  Work includes the collection of biological, chemical, and habitat information in streams and lakes to be used for fisheries management purposes. Duties include surveying using backpack, bank, barge, boat and raft electrofishing gear; gill nets, trap nets, and seines. Applicant will frequently work on non-native fish control projects on the Colorado, Yampa, and White Rivers. Technicians will also help conduct creel surveys of local anglers. Hiking, backpacking, camping, and UTV use will be a regular part of the job. Employees are expected to work long hours in adverse conditions, handle ambiguity, drive trucks with trailers, operate boats and rafts, and wade in streams and rivers. 
 
* Work in inclement weather and frequent overnight travel will be required.* 
 
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:  A degree or college-level coursework in fisheries, wildlife, or related natural resources field and outdoor/backcountry travel experience is required. Applicants must have a valid driver’s license, experience towing trailers, ability to work well as part of a team, and a good attitude are required. The ability to participate in strenuous physical activities including long-distance travel on foot carrying equipment and personal gear, and lift heavy objects (40+pounds) are preferred and will be a regular part of the job. Applicants should have strong organizational and communication skills and knowledge of computer programs such as Microsoft Word, Excel is necessary and GIS is beneficial. Additional desirable qualities: experience with fish sampling techniques, rafting experience, and fish identification experience. Technician must be willing to frequently travel and work in inclement weather. Late night work, irregular hours, and weekend work will be required, as needed.
