Description
Research Focus
I am seeking applicants for one graduate teaching assistantship (Master’s) that will be focused on surveying water bodies for alligator snapping turtles (AST; Macrochelys temminckii) on wildlife management areas in Louisiana. The knowledge gained through this project will provide insight into the status of ASTs on state owned/managed properties that have historically received little to no research attention. The successful candidate will be enrolled as a Master’s student in the Biology Department of the University of Louisiana at Monroe, and tuition and most fees are waived.

Desired Qualifications
By the start date, candidates must hold a Bachelor’s degree in wildlife management, environmental biology, ecology, conservation biology, forestry, or other relevant majors. Prior experience with the safe operation of small motorboats and with trapping/handling of aquatic turtles is preferred but not required. Must be an effective leader and able to work well with others as this will be a large endeavor that will require the assistance of a technician, undergraduate researchers, etc. The ability to conduct rigorous fieldwork under extreme conditions (e.g., heat, humidity, alligators, venomous snakes) will be necessary. Excellent communication and time-management skills, a strong work ethic, and attention to detail also are essential. The candidate must also have a valid Louisiana driver’s license, or be able to obtain a valid Louisiana driver’s license immediately upon starting. A reliable vehicle is required for field work.

Deadline
Review of applications will begin immediately and will continue until the position is filled. Communications should be directed to Dr. Ross Couvillon (rcouvillon@ulm.edu). To apply, please send an email with the subject line “Alligator Snapping Turtle MS Assistantship” that includes a single PDF file containing a cover letter, resume or CV, unofficial transcripts, unofficial GRE scores (if available), and contact information for three references. A start date of August 2025 and enrollment for the Fall 2025 semester is anticipated.
