Job Description and Duties
The duties of this job include: deploying autonomous recording units and trail cameras on state and federal wildlife areas during the spring and summer, deploying autonomous recording units and trail cameras on National Forest Lands; completing point count surveys using distance sampling methods at predetermined locations associated with recording unit deployments. Process audio and trail camera data by uploading files to data repositories and species identifications software, validate random subsets of species detections from audio data, and manually process trail camera images, Other duties include data entry, deployment gear maintenance and inventory of field equipment.
This position offers the possibility of an office-centered telework agreement based on the Department's current Telework Policy.
The Fish and Wildlife Scientific Aid classification is a non-testing classification.

Working Conditions
Possession of a CA driver’s license and ability to drive for up to 6 hours. Must be willing to work long, irregular hours, including early mornings, evenings, and weekends. Field activities may include strenuous physical activity in variable weather conditions (hot or cold).

Good driving record. Willingness to: work irregular hours including weekends and holidays and to travel in performing field work throughout the State, do routine work in order to learn, develop interest in and aptitude for the work, wear a uniform. Physical strength and ability to lift 40 pounds. Ability to hike one-mile to and from deployment location on potentially steep terrain. Incumbent must possess good communication skills, get along well with others and work in small groups for extended periods of time. Ability to interact with the public and maintain a high level of professional integrity.

Desirable Qualifications

Knowledge of California's upland gamebird species and wildlife survey methods.. Experience driving a 4-wheel drive or off-highway vehicle Wildlife biology, ecology, and taxonomy (e.g., ornithology, mammalogy, herpetology, etc.). Conduct on-line research of scientific literature and write at a college level. Knowledge of spreadsheet and word processing software. Ability to work remotely without direct supervision. Good organizational skills and ability to keep accurate records.
