Field Tech – Small Mammal Response to Forest Restoration Treatments
The graduate program in natural resources at Oregon Tech is seeking a highly motivated undergraduate student to serve as a field assistant studying the effects of forest restoration treatments on small mammal populations (Glaucomys sabrinus, Neotoma spp., Microtus spp., etc.) in Lassen Volcanic National Park (LAVO). Students with an interest in wildlife ecology and natural resource management are encouraged to apply.

Students with an interest in wildlife ecology and natural resource management are encouraged to apply.
Qualified Applicants Will Demonstrate the Following
- Educational or work experience in natural resource management, forestry, wildlife, biology, environmental science, or other closely related fields
- Enthusiasm for demanding field work in challenging conditions including
- Ability to carry 40lbs of equipment off trail through rough terrain
- Willing to work outside in variable weather conditions
- Tolerate exposure to biting insects, risk of venomous snake encounters, and zoonotic diseases, parasites, and viruses
- Proficiency using a compass to navigate off trail
- An ability to work both cooperatively and independently
- Excellent organization, analytical, and communication skills
- A valid US driver’s license
- Able to provide own transport to LAVO field station
Primary Responsibilities
Assisting a graduate student with all aspects of conducting a mark-recapture study across multiple forest plots including the following:

- Transporting mammal trapping equipment and supplies off trail using backpacks
- Establishing trapping grids
- Checking traps in the early morning, mid-day, and late evening
- Identifying, handling, and marking of live mammals
- Strictly adhering to safety protocols including sanitizing traps, wearing personal protective equipment
Position Duration and Schedule
Start Date: no later than June 20th

Duration: 11-12 weeks
Weekly Schedule: 6 days on, 1 day off
Approximate Daily Schedule: 5-8am; 1-3pm; 8-9pm
Benefits
- $450 per week for at least 11 weeks
- Paid monthly
