Service Dates: June 23, 2025 to October 24, 2025 (18 week, 685-hour position)

Position Summary -
In partnership with the Mt. Adams Institute (MAI), the Mt. Hood National Forest will sponsor an AmeriCorps Intern to serve as a Recreation Technician. The Intern will support the implementation of infrastructure improvement projects, including site signage installation and an information kiosk installation project. In addition to these projects, the Intern will develop a broad understanding of developed recreation operations, trail construction and maintenance, and off-highway vehicle program management on one of the nation's busiest national forests. This important work prevents the degradation of natural resources. It enhances a visitor’s experience, enjoyment, and satisfaction of the outdoors, providing a wide range of positive health benefits and giving visitors a reason to travel and spend money in the local area. In addition, the Intern will receive training in all facets of recreation program operations, including, but not limited to, hazard tree identification, chainsaw operations, UTV/ATV operations, campground management, trail layout, and construction, among others. Work will concentrate primarily on front-country/developed recreation-related tasks (approximately 75% of the time), with trails and OHV work comprising the remaining 25%. The work schedule for this position will be Thursday through Sunday, 07:00am to 5:30pm.

Essential Functions - to include, but not limited to:
- Regular maintenance of both campground and other recreational facilities.
- Coordinate the installation of a variety of new informational kiosks in recreation sites.
- Lead sign replacement efforts in developed recreation sites and along roads.
- Assist with logging out, brushing, and signing OHV trails.
- Assist with the construction of new motorized trails.
- Support non-motorized trail maintenance efforts with chainsaw and other hand tools.
- Assist with logging out of wilderness trails using a crosscut saw.
- Receive training on all facets of recreation program operations.
Position Requirements - to include, but not limited:
- Must have a valid driver's license, clean driving record and ability to provide documentation.
- Physically able and willing to participate in field-going activities regularly, and able to hike at least 5 miles carrying at least 15 pounds of gear, and utilize tools such as shovels, rakes, Pulaski’s, weed-eaters, and mowers.
- Passion for outdoor recreation, and a willingness to learn and grow professionally.
- Desire to serve the public independently and as a team.
- 21-30 years of age (up to 35 for military veterans) at beginning of service term.
- U.S. citizen, national or lawful permanent resident.
- Ability to commit to the full 18-week term of service.
- Selection, placement, and retention are contingent upon passing the National Sex Offender Public Registry, state of service and state of residence criminal history check, and a national FBI check.
- Must follow all health and safety policies and procedures, including any changes that are implemented throughout the course of the program. Accepting a position means accepting the current requirements and any updates to those requirements while enrolled in the program.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience serving in a team-oriented capacity.
- Experience operating ATVs, UTVs, chainsaws and power tools desired, but not required.
- Experience leading small construction projects.
- Knowledge of outdoor recreation management and an interest in improving opportunities for people.
