Description
Three graduate assistantships for M.S. thesis students are available for the Fall 2025 semester in the Biology Program at the University of West Georgia. The 10-month positions include two graduate teaching assistantships (GTA) that can support students working with any of our graduate faculty and one graduate research assistantship (GRA) in the Edelman Lab (see below for details). The GTAs will support undergraduate laboratory instruction. Prospective students for GTAs should contact potential thesis advisors from one of our 14 UWG Biology faculty spanning a variety of subdisciplines. Once an advisor is identified, submit an M.S. application to the UWG application portal (due June 1) that includes a personal statement, resume, official transcripts, and two letters of recommendation. Review of applications will begin immediately and continue until the positions are filled.

Salary & Benefits (same for all positions)
·         $1,000 per month (20 hours/week) from August 2025 through May 2026 ($10,000 total)
·         Tuition waiver for Fall/spring semesters (student fees not covered)
·         Requires medical insurance coverage. If private coverage is not carried, then coverage is available through United Healthcare at the student’s cost.
·         Limited summer GTA positions may be available for June/July 2026
·         GTAs are usually continued for the student’s second year, but are contingent on university budgeting.

Minimum Qualifications for all positions
·         B.S. in biology or related field with at least a 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale.
·         Willing graduate faculty member as thesis advisor in UWG Biology Program.
·         Excellent quantitative, writing, and oral communication skills.
·         Must meet all eligibility requirements for employment in U.S. Due to the short hiring timeline, we can only consider international applicants already in the U.S. with visas.

M.S. Graduate Research Assistantship in Biology
The Edelman research lab at the University of West Georgia is seeking a highly qualified and motivated M.S. student to join their team. The focus of the thesis research is open and will be determined based on the student’s interest and experience, available resources/collaborations, and alignment with the lab research goals (Improving knowledge and management of rare vertebrates, particularly mammals in the southeast). Available lab resources include access to a 4WD truck, mammalian live traps, game cameras, acoustic monitors, insect traps, habitat measurement equipment, and telemetry equipment. The second-year salary will likely be funded as a GTA, but is contingent on university budgeting. For the GRA, please email a PDF application containing a short letter of interest, Resume/CV, unofficial transcript, and contact information for two professional references to Dr. Andrew Edelman, aedelman@westga.edu. Review of applications will begin immediately and continue until the position is filled.

Additional Minimum Qualifications for GRA in Edelman Lab
·         Strong experience in ecological/wildlife research at the undergraduate or post-baccalaureate level
·         Willingness to spend time at remote locations
·         Ability to hike across rough terrain under a variety of weather conditions while hauling heavy equipment
·         Orienteering skills including use of maps, compass, and GPS
·         Ability to drive 4WD vehicle
·         Basic training in GIS and statistics (Preferred)
