Greater Sage-Grouse Research Technician - Wyoming
Description
One research technician position is available to collect field data on greater sage-grouse in Wyoming. This research aims to understand the effects of wind energy and free-roaming horses on sage-grouse. The technician will be stationed near the proposed Jackalope Wind Facility near Point of Rocks, Wyoming. This position will start once a qualified applicant is found and will last until 15 August 2025. Shared housing will be provided as trailers with running water, electricity, and heating/AC.
Main Responsibilities
- Completing and recording data for vegetation surveys (recording canopy cover, ground cover, visual obstruction, shrub density, and herbivore fecal piles) at and around greater sage-grouse nest and brood locations.
- Performing mammalian camera trap surveys
- Conducting raptor and raven point count surveys
- Capturing and handling adult and yearling juvenile sage-grouse in July and August
Minor Responsibilities
- Tracking greater sage-grouse using UHF and VHF radio telemetry
- Monitoring nests and conducting nighttime counts of greater sage-grouse broods
Technicians will work as employees of the University of Wyoming and will collaborate closely with:
- A graduate student from the University of Wyoming
- Dr. Jeff Beck, Principal Investigator with the University of Wyoming
- Bureau of Land Management Biologists
- Wyoming Game and Fish Department Biologists and Game Wardens
- Industry personnel
- Private landowners
- Research biologists from WEST Inc. in Laramie, Wyoming
- A Research Biologist from the Sutton Avian Research Center in Bartlesville, Oklahoma
Qualifications:
Experience working in prairie/desert ecosystems is preferred but not required. Applicants must be able to work safely and effectively in remote field conditions with minimal supervision.
Key qualifications include:
- Proficiency in operating ATVs/UTVs and 4WD trucks with trailers
- Ability to navigate using maps and GPS
- Willingness to hike moderate distances and work long, irregular hours (including nights) (>40/week)
- Ability to live and work harmoniously with co-workers in shared housing
- Familiarity with identifying potential mammalian and avian predators of sage-grouse
- Experience tracking wildlife with radio telemetry would also be beneficial, but is not required.
