Job Description
This position supports the School of Natural Resources fisheries faculty and is responsible for coordinating field and laboratory efforts in support of research and teaching by the UTK Fisheries Lab faculty. Expectations include leading, coordinating, and assisting with the collection of fisheries and aquatic ecosystem data; management and maintenance of scientific supplies and equipment, vehicles, and watercraft; processing of samples for laboratory analyses; management of databases and scientific collections. The position assists faculty supervisors with preparing reports, obtaining scientific permits, purchasing scientific supplies and equipment, and coordination and execution of classroom activities. This is a grant-funded position and is contingent upon the continued funding of the grant.
Responsibilities
- Leading, coordinating, and assisting with the collection of fisheries and aquatic ecosystem data.
- Management and maintenance of scientific supplies and equipment, vehicles, and watercraft.
- Processing of samples for laboratory analyses.
- Management of databases and scientific collections.
- Assists faculty supervisors with preparing reports, obtaining scientific permits, purchasing scientific supplies and equipment, and coordination and execution of classroom activities.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications
- Education:
- Bachelor’s degree in fisheries science, environmental management, or a comparable field of study
- Experience:
- 2 years of experience in the field of fisheries or environmental management.
- Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
- Knowledge of fisheries sampling techniques (snorkeling, use of different types of nets, trotlines, boat and backpack electrofishing, etc) and techniques for sampling aquatic environments
- Ability to operate, care for, and maintain watercraft, including the ability to trailer and operate motorboats
- Ability to drive a vehicle and possess a valid driver's license
- Ability to swim and carry over 50 lbs
- Knowledge of or ability to learn data management software (Excel, Program R, Microsoft Access, or others)
- Ability to be organized, self-motivated, and receive instructions to carry out detailed tasks, and be comfortable working in remote settings under adverse and unpredictable conditions.
- Applicants must be legally authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis without need now or in the future for sponsorship for employment visa status.
Preferred Qualifications
- Education:
- Master's degree in fisheries or environmental management.
- Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
- Knowledge of fish identification
- Skills in fish tagging (including PIT and acoustic telemetry)
- Knowledge in aquatic invertebrate sampling, identification, and preparation
- Age and growth structure preparation and interpretation skills
- Knowledge and experience in leading field crews independently
