Natural Resources Job Board

An internship position is available to help with sea turtle nest protection on Sanibel and Captiva Islands, FL. The interns will be responsible for placing protective cages around nests in predation hotspots and inventorying nests post-hatch to determine hatching success. Additional responsibilities may include monitoring the beach in search of nesting sea turtles and conducting nest relocations associated with a renourishment project. Opportunities to observe research projects, such as satellite telemetry, may also arise. Work schedule may require daytime and/or nighttime hours as needed based on project demands. 

Successful candidates must be able to work closely with other interns, a large group of volunteers, and contractors. Previous experience conducting morning sea turtle nesting surveys and nest relocation preferred but not required. Surveys will be conducted 7 days per week.  Weekend work will be required.  Housing included.

Required qualifications:

·         Bachelor’s degree and related experience working outdoors

·         Ability and desire to work long hours 

·         Ability to work under adverse conditions (heat, biting insects, rain)

·         Ability to work independently to accomplish set goals and as part of a team

·         Ability to maintain a positive attitude and flexibility with an irregular schedule

·         Previous experience conducting morning and nighttime sea turtle surveys

·         Previous experience verifying egg chambers and relocating sea turtle nests

·         Experience driving ATVs and UTVs

·         Experience with public outreach
