Description
Position: Research Associate – Fisheries Management & Ecology
Location: Department of Aquaculture and Fisheries, University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff, Pine Bluff, Arkansas
Appointment: Twelve month (100% Research)
Qualifications: A degree (BS required, MS preferred) in fisheries, wildlife, natural resources, environmental sciences, or a closely related field. Experience with diverse types of fisheries field and lab work preferred. Arkansas Boating Safety certification (or equivalent) and experience with boats, trucks, and trailers is required.
Duties and Responsibilities: Under the direction of project principal investigators, the successful candidate will be responsible for the daily management of field and lab components of multiple fisheries research studies. These duties will include performing basic water quality, using active and passive fish sampling gears in diverse aquatic environments, species-level identification of fishes, ageing of fishes, and routine maintenance of boats, sampling gears, trailers, and other field and lab equipment. The incumbent will be responsible for maintaining all equipment in good working order, ordering and purchasing necessary supplies, maintaining an inventory of all equipment and supplies, maintaining an adequate maintenance schedule for all equipment, preparing data sheets, managing data sets, and organizing all necessary equipment and supplies for field and lab activities. Good computer and data management skills are required, with specialized computer programming (e.g., R, SAS, and GIS) and mapping (e.g., side-scan sonar, ArcGIS, ReefMaster, etc.) preferred. The successful candidate will be able to train and supervise undergraduate student workers and train new graduate students on proper field and lab techniques.
Personal Characteristics: The successful candidate will be a conscientious individual who enjoys working outdoors, has a keen interest in science and solving problems, and takes pride in overseeing an organized and efficient research program. The incumbent also must be able to develop effective working relationships with the principal investigators, both undergraduate and graduate students, and other personnel in the Department of Aquaculture and Fisheries. Although teaching experience is not required, an individual with experience teaching undergraduate and graduate students proper field and lab techniques would be preferred.
Salary: $40,000 per year
