Title: Deer Program Technician – Kentucky

Job Description: The Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources has two openings for seasonal technicians working with its white-tailed deer program. These are 7-month, full time seasonal positions. Workstation location will change over the course of the position depending on program needs, but most work will occur in western Kentucky around the Paducah area. Position duties include the following, but not limited to: (1) assist staff with ongoing deer capture and collaring project, (2) assist with ongoing CWD surveillance efforts, (3) conduct prescribed fire and other habitat management work, (4) data entry, and (5) various other duties assigned.
Candidates should be prepared to work some weekends, irregular hours, and travel throughout the state. Our CWD surveillance efforts will focus on the Kentucky modern gun season in November. Work will be required during the entire month of November with accommodations made for holidays.
Full time housing is provided while based out of Doug Travis WMA in Bardwell, KY. Travel will be covered when working out of the KDFWR headquarters office in Frankfort or elsewhere in the state.
Qualifications: A successful candidate will have a valid driver’s license, satisfactory driving record, and must work well both individually and in a team setting. An excellent work ethic is mandatory. B.S. in Wildlife Management, Wildlife Sciences or related biological sciences degree is desired.
Some basic experience collecting CWD samples and interacting with the hunting public is preferred. Big game, especially white-tailed deer, capture experience is desired. Experience operating ATVs/ UTVS and other offroad driving is preferred, as is the ability to operate and haul a trailer. Habitat management experience, including the use of chainsaws, similar equipment, or herbicide application, is desired. Prescribed fire experience and/ or certifications are preferred but not necessary. Candidates must be able to traverse rough and mountainous terrain in all weather conditions with equipment. Must be able to carry 25 lbs. of equipment several hundred yards and pass a physical fitness test as part of the prescribed fire qualifications. Applicants must be willing to work in adverse weather during cold winter months during deer capture season.
