Primary Position Function: Conduct field and lab research within the Sustainability Theme of the Center for Advanced Bioenergy and Bioproducts Innovation (CABBI).
Summary: This hourly technician will conduct field and laboratory research tasks associated with a study of the biogeochemical impacts of cane cultivation for biofuel production in the research group of Nuria Gomez-Casanovas. Key objectives are to: (1) Understand how prior land use history and stand age influence greenhouse gases (GHGs; CO2, CH4 and N2O) emissions from sugarcane plantations; and, (2) Quantify the efficiency with which sugarcane uses water resources.
The employee will be required to work in Jeanerette and Houma, Louisiana, and must have the capability to travel from one location to the another in a timely fashion. The employee is responsible for securing personal transportation. A valid driver’s license is required. Some evening and/or weekend work will be required. When working, the employee may be exposed to a variety of environmental factors including, but not limited to, hot or cold weather, exposure to noise and allergens, and uneven ground. In performing the functions of this position, the employee may also be subjected to various mental and physical demands including, but not limited to, independently traveling to and performing work at different locations, ability to move, transfer, and/or transport items that may occasionally weigh up to forty (40) pounds and frequently weigh up to twenty (20) pounds, and twisting, pushing, and pulling movements.
Major Duties and Responsibilities:
- Field work:
- assist with the maintenance of eddy covariance towers – a state of the art method for high frequency monitoring of ecosystem greenhouse gas exchange
- direct measurements of soil CO2 and non-CO2 trace gas emissions, and soil, water and biomass (plant) sampling (40%)
- Lab and office: aid with soil, water, and biomass sample processing, data analysis, and preparation and maintenance of field equipment and supplies (40%)
- Other duties as assigned (20%)
Position Requirements:
- Education – Bachelor’s degree in biology, environmental science, chemistry, or related field
- Experience – Research experience in the field and laboratory related to biogeochemistry; experience working in challenging environmental conditions, including those characteristic of subtropical and tropical climates.
- Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities – Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, ability to work independently and in a team, ability to multitask, excellent communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Demonstrated knowledge of troubleshooting environmental monitoring equipment.
- Demonstrated knowledge of biogeochemical methods including trace gas flux measurements, soil and water sampling, and eddy covariance
- Demonstrated knowledge of biogeochemical modeling
Rate of pay: $40-$44/hour. Non-benefit eligible, academic hourly position paid on a bi-weekly basis.
Schedule: 40 hours/week
Position duration: this is a 12-month position that can be renewed through November 30, 2027, contingent on satisfactory progress and the availability of funds
Start date: June 2025 or as soon as possible
