Appalachian Trail Outreach Steward - Americorps Position

Overview:
  • Location: The Maine section of the Appalachian Trail (working from a home office.)
  • Duration: Approximately 11 months, starting August 25, 2025
  • Service Hours: 1,700 hours
  • Compensation: Bi-weekly living allowance ($1000 before taxes), $4,400 housing stipend, Segal AmeriCorps Education Award ($7,395), health insurance, phone and mileage reimbursements, training and professional development.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Volunteer Recruitment and Support: Assist with recruiting, training, and supporting volunteers engaged in conservation education and stewardship activities. Maintain and manage a volunteer database to effectively match new volunteers with experienced trail maintainers and partner organizations.
  • Project Coordination: Coordinate trail-related projects by connecting high school, college, summer camp, and underserved youth groups with MATC leaders. Support the planning and execution of trail maintenance and construction projects such as building bog bridges, tent platforms, and privies.
  • Alpine Education Program: Implement an educational program for both youth and adults that includes off-trail presentations, guided hikes, and stewardship projects on Saddleback and Bigelow Mountains. Collaborate with MATC’s seasonal Ridgerunners to deliver program content.
  • Outdoor Ethics Programming: Lead Outdoor Ethics Hikes for children at various locations along the Appalachian Trail, promoting Leave No Trace principles and environmental awareness.
  • Trail Ambassador Program: Support the development of an Appalachian Trail Ambassador program, with an emphasis on educating hikers and protecting the fragile alpine ecosystems around Saddleback Mountain.
  • Recordkeeping and Communication: Maintain accurate records of volunteer hours and release forms. Contribute to internal and external communications, including reports, evaluations, and social media content.

Desired Skills and Qualifications:
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Experience in volunteer management and community outreach
  • Backcountry camping and hiking experience
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Proficiency in social media and Microsoft Office or Google Workspace
  • First Aid and CPR certification (or willingness to obtain)
  • Passion for outdoors and environmental conservation
