Job Summary:
 
The FIU Institute of Environment is currently seeking an individual to join the Ogurcak Lab for Coastal Change and Management as a temporary research assistant who will assist with field sampling and lab analysis as part of an EPA-funded project located in the Biscayne Bay Coastal Wetlands. The position is for 10 months with the possibility of renewal for an additional year pending available grant funding. The position begins in late July / early August 2025. This is a full-time (40 hrs/wk), temporary, non-benefitted position.
 
Job Duties / Responsibilities:
 
Primary responsibilities include taking field measurements of mangrove structure and hydrologic parameters, collecting water, leaf, and soil samples, preparing samples for analysis, entering data into Excel spreadsheets, data management, data QA/QC, and maintenance of field equipment. Additional responsibilities could include assistance with reporting.
 
Minimum Requirements:
 
Enrolled in degree program related to biology or environmental science and 1-year experience working in collection of ecological data (either volunteer or paid) or completed Bachelor’s degree in above or similar field. Must possess and maintain a valid state motor vehicle operator's license for the type of vehicle(s) operated to perform the duties of this position.
 
Must be fluent in speaking, writing, and reading in English. Must have ability to work in remote field settings for long hours, carrying a pack up to a mile. Working conditions include hot, humid, inclement weather, and biting insects. Sites will be reached either on foot or by boat. Boating safety course or willingness to take a course is required. Should have experience using a personal computer for communication and data entry, including MS Office & Zoom. Should have the ability to navigate in the field using a GPS and compass.
