Description
SEASONAL BURROWING OWL BIOLOGIST needed for Burrowing Owl monitoring and research projects in southern and central California. The successful applicant will be supervised by a project manager and project investigator. Primary duties will include: 1) monitoring active Burrowing Owl nests with regular visits and through the use of motion-activated cameras placed at nest entrances, 2) trapping and banding adult and nestling Burrowing Owls, 3) collecting blood and feather samples from captured Burrowing Owls, 4) reviewing and transcribing camera images from Burrowing Owl nests, 5) resighting banded Burrowing Owls, 6) data entry (excel, ArcGIS pro, Survey 123, ArcGIS FieldMaps), 7) vehicle and equipment maintenance, and 8) other tasks as needed.
This position will be full time beginning asap through October 2025 (and likely beyond that if so desired). Field housing and field vehicle will be provided for work use.
Qualifications
Required
-excellent physical condition, willing to work unusual hours (including occasionally early morning and night) in the field under hot, windy, dusty, and other adverse weather conditions
-excellent attention to detail
-able to pass a background check
-in possession of a valid driver’s license
-good vision and hearing
-experience surveying for birds
-ability to work independently
Preferred but not required
-B.S. or M.S. in related field
-experience monitoring bird nests
-experience using ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Field Maps, Survey 123, Excel, R, or other computer programs
-experience resighting birds and using optics (binoculars, spotting scope)
-experience using trail cameras and processing photos
-experience handling, capturing, banding, and taking blood and feather samples from birds
