Description
We are seeking an enthusiastic and motivated PhD student to work on an exciting collaborative project that investigates linkages between the chemical environments in Texas bay systems, the plankton that are there, and the performance of larval invertebrate species that are important to fisheries, e.g., oyster aquaculture. This project builds upon the expertise of faculty mentors with high-throughput toxicological studies using zebrafish (Dr. Tanguay) and plankton ecology and aquaculture studies focused on feeding behavior and nutrition (Dr. Roelke), and other collaborators working in fisheries industries. A full graduate research assistantship will be covered by the Hagler Institute for the first year of the project. With subsequent support offered as a graduate teaching assistant by the Department of Marine Biology at Texas A&M University at Galveston.
Desired Requirements:
· Undergraduate or master’s degree in cheminformatics, toxicology, marine biology, or related discipline.
· Aquarium and Zoo Aquatic Life Support Operators Society certifications for Water Technician Level 1 and Life Support Level 2.
· Experience with data collection, water quality analysis, and environmental sampling.
· Experience with plankton experiments.
· Knowledge of basic software, i.e., ArcGIS Pro, Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), Teams, Outlook, RStudio.
· Good written and verbal skills.
· Able to effectively collaborate with mentors across different disciplines.
Job Description:
· Collect and analyze water quality and plankton data from multiple locations in multiple bay systems of the Texas coastline.
· Deploy and recover long-term sensors in Texas bay systems.
· Conduct laboratory and field experiments focused on larval invertebrate performance.
Informal inquiries can be made to Drs. Daniel Roelke or Robyn Tanguay, at: droelke@tamug.edu, tanguayr@tamu.edu
How to Apply:
Please send: Cover letter highlighting education background, research experience, and career goals (1 page only).
