Description
Title: Postdoctoral Research Associate in Waterfowl Ecology
Affiliation: Snowden Waterfowl Center of Excellence; University of Arkansas Division of Agriculture
Location: University of Arkansas at Monticello, Arkansas
Start date: Immediately
Available funding – 3 years, annual renewal upon performance

Project Description: The Snowden Waterfowl Center of Excellence housed with the University of Arkansas Division of
Agriculture and hosted on the campus of University of Arkansas at Monticello is seeking applicants for
a Postdoctoral Research Associate position to explore aspects of movement ecology of midcontinent
mallards as it relates to landscape dynamics and change. These individuals will work collaboratively with
faculty, staff, and students across the University of Arkansas System as well as with external agencies
and university partners within the waterfowl profession. The Postdoc position carries an annual salary
of $75,000 plus retirement and health benefits. Expected start date flexible, as early as immediately.
Project: Our Lab and network of collaborating partners have rich data sets of GPS locations and
accelerometer data from transmitters and light-level geolocation data used to track movement of
wintering waterfowl between 2019 and present. We are seeking a Postdoc to join the team in exploring
a range of objectives related to their expertise and interests including but not limited to transmitter
effects on local movement behavior, landscape dynamics and impacts on distribution, predictive
landscape design and configuration, recursion movements to identify critical corridors or sanctuary,
flight metrics associated with clean energy development, winter habitat selection, settlement patterns of
hen mallards on the nesting grounds, and distribution modeling. The candidate will network with and
build on previous and on-going projects in the region to better understand factors influencing
behavioral and population level changes in a shifting and declining midcontinent mallard population.
An additional area of research will be predictive in nature employing simulation models focusing on
wetland complex design and reforestation prioritization at multiple spatial scales to benefit habitat
quality for wintering waterfowl. The desired candidates will have knowledge of waterfowl and
experience with spatial and ecological modeling to address the research objectives using modern
statistical packages, open access machine learning, modeling algorithms, and/or mapping applications.
Opportunity may present itself to teach or co-teach a course in your area of expertise and/or serve on
graduate student committees.

Requirements: Applicants must have a PhD in ecology, wildlife sciences, or geospatial modeling.
Experience with animal movement data (telemetry, step-selection, recursion/UDs), background in
habitat or species distribution modeling, familiarity with remote sensing, and landscape analyses, and a
record of peer-reviewed publication.

Application & Additional Information: An initial application screening process will be conducted
as applications are received. Please send cover letter, curriculum vitae, and names and contact
information for three references (as a single document) to osborne@uamont.edu with the subject
line “Snowden Waterfowl Center Postdoc”.

The position is available until a qualified applicant is selected.
