Description

Position Overview
The Pauli Lab at the University of Wisconsin-Madison is looking for two temporary technicians to conduct winter small mammal trapping in the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest of northern Wisconsin. This work is in support of a collaborative effort between UW Madison, the Great Lakes Indian Fish and Wildlife Commission, the US Forest Service, and the Wisconsin DNR, which seeks to identify factors affecting small mammal abundance and community composition across the northern Great Lakes region.

Job Duties
Each technician will independently manage a series of Sherman-trap grids located in two different sections of the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest. Field work will consist primarily of measuring snow conditions and handling, identifying, tagging, and collecting morphometric data from small mammals. Successful applicants will also be responsible for data entry, basic equipment maintenance, sustaining communication with project leads, and other duties as needs arise.

Successful applicants should be comfortable working alone or with support from the project lead or our partner agencies. This position will require a flexible schedule and many early mornings. Wisconsin winters can be frigid and work may occasionally occur in temperatures as low as -15F. Accordingly, candidates with experience living or working in cold winter conditions will be strongly preferred.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Availability for the entire period
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule with early mornings.
  • Ability to work alone with little oversight as well as to work effectively with collaborators from diverse backgrounds.
  • Comfort using GPS to navigate to and within field sites
  • Valid US Driver’s License
  • Comfort driving on highways and forest roads in snowy winter conditions
  • Permission to work in the US (unfortunately, we cannot provide visa sponsorship for this position)

Strongly Preferred Qualifications
  • Previous experience working independently
  • Previous experience using Sherman traps
  • Previous experience handling, measuring, and tagging small mammals
  • Personal or working experience outdoors in winter conditions
  • Previous experience driving in winter conditions
  • Prior experience navigating using a GPS to navigate to and within field sites

Benefits
$15-17/hr * approx 40hrs per week (exact hours will vary)
Shared housing and a field vehicle for travel to and from sites are provided.
