Description
Everglades National Park is seeking three full-time BioCorps interns to participate in the park’s Tegu Control Program. Primary duties for the internship center around the control of invasive black and white tegu lizards. Most days consist of monitoring an array of over 300 live animal traps in and around Everglades National Park and entering associated data. Interns will also participate in other invasive animal projects as needed, such as removal of Peter's rock agamas, green iguanas, and tokay geckos. As with most invasive animal control efforts, humane euthanasia is a necessary reality and interns hired to the program must be willing to participate in this component of the project.

Housing is provided to all interns for the full 9-month term, this includes power, water, and internet access. The lodging may be a shared dorm (6 bedrooms) or house (2-3 bedrooms). All bedrooms are single occupancy.

The BioCorps internship program supports biological management, monitoring, and research within the Florida Everglades and is supported through a collaboration between the National Park Service, the University of Florida, and the Alliance for Florida’s National Parks. Upon completion of this internship, interns are eligible to receive a Public Lands Corps benefit, which confers two years of competitive hiring status for federal land management agencies.

QUALIFICATIONS:
Applicants must have a relevant bachelor’s degree, strong work ethic, and demonstrated ability to collect data. Applicants should be comfortable working in seriously hot, humid conditions, in the constant presence of mixed-species swarms of biting insects. They should also be confident handling large reptiles and be able to work as part of a team as well as independently. The ideal candidate will have some pertinent work experience outside of university and experience doing fieldwork, collecting and managing data, and identifying local plants and animals. Government vehicles will be used for work duties, but interns living in housing must possess a vehicle for traveling between the park and the nearest amenities, such as grocery stores (~11mi).

A valid U.S. driver's license and a clean driving record are required, and a background check will be necessary.
