Description
The Department of Environmental and Sustainability Sciences at TCU (https://cse.tcu.edu/environmental-sciences/) has opportunities available for prospective MS students (starting Fall 2026) in the area of urban and community forestry. Potential research projects include 1) evaluating the effectiveness of urban tree planting programs after disaster events, 2) examining the impacts of urban forest loss on ecosystem services, and 3) assessing trees’ contribution to human thermal comfort in highly walkable communities. Research projects will be grounded in the emerging field of sustainability science and use quantitative or qualitative methods to examine interactions between social and natural systems. Preference will be given to applicants with demonstrated experience in geographic information systems (GIS), whether through coursework or work-related projects. Funding is available for highly qualified applicants, including full tuition, a $16,500 stipend per academic year, and a one-time summer research support up to $3,000. The application deadline for Fall 2026 is January 15, 2026. For questions, please contact Dr. Brendan Lavy. To apply, please visit https://www.applyweb.com/tcug/index.ftl

Prerequisites for the MS degree: A bachelor’s degree with a GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale in a major in environmental science, biology, geology (or the equivalent) or a major in one of the other sciences, or engineering, or one of the social sciences.
