Description
Field Biologists will conduct raptor and golden eagle nest monitoring and searches in the Southwest during construction activities to help avoid or minimize disturbance to the nest. Field biologists may also be tasked with conducting standardized surveys at operational wind facilities to document bird and bat fatalities, preconstruction wildlife clearance surveys (e.g., nesting birds, fossorial mammals), fixed-point avian use surveys, and other surveys as needed (e.g., botanical surveys). A successful candidate will be able to work independently and with other field staff in rural and/or remote locations, follow field survey protocols to ensure accurate and complete data collection, and demonstrate experience in the identification of western bird species by sight and sound. Travel is required for nest monitoring; biologists should expect to stay in locations for several nights during the season; hotels will be provided in nearby cities/towns located in close proximity to project areas. Work schedules may vary from week to week depending on project and seasonal workloads, but typically averages 30-40 hours weekly; may require shorter/longer work weeks depending on project needs and travel distances to and from project areas. Reliable transportation (4WD or SUV preferred) is required, along with binoculars, appropriate footwear, and proper clothing. If personal protective equipment (e.g., snake gaiters) is required, it will be provided by GSA.

Additional Information: Mileage will be paid at the federal rate for personal vehicle use, including mileage accrued traveling to and from the Project; travel time is also paid. Per diem will be paid at the federal rate for any work-related travel. Additional field equipment (e.g., spotting scope, tablet) will be provided by GSA, if necessary. Housing is NOT provided.

QUALIFICATIONS:

• Bachelor’s degree in wildlife biology, ecology, natural resources, or equivalent degree.

• Ability to follow field protocols and requirements.

• Ability to work independently, and interact professionally with clients, landowners, other field biologists, field coordinators, field supervisors, and project managers; ability to maintain a positive attitude and accept guidance and constructive criticism when needed.

• Surveys may require extensive sitting and/or walking in locations where terrain varies and temperature, and other site conditions can be extreme (e.g., venomous snakes).

  • Seasonal Position - May 2025 to August 2025
