Description
Position Title: Big Creek Outdoor Education Intern
Reports to: Lead Educator
Pay Rate: $200 / month
Term: June 10th, 2024 - August 15th, 2024

Major Function: The primary goal for this internship is to grow as educators. The Glacier Institute’s seasoned educators will mentor interns and introduce them to the outdoor education field. Interns play an essential role in the operation of the Glacier Institute’s Big Creek Outdoor Education Center, our youth campus. The Glacier Institute specializes in place-based, hands-on learning of the natural sciences and cultural history, and interns are an integral part of ensuring that we achieve our mission. 

By the end of the season, interns will be able to co-teach Glacier institute classes under the mentorship of an Outdoor Education Specialist II.

Applicants should know this is a demanding job with variable hours. Because of the unpredictable nature of our work, applicants need to know how to prioritize customer service in adverse conditions. Interns need to be motivated by the mission to strengthen connections to the natural world through outdoor education, and understand that investing in our participants is of utmost importance.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:
  1. Represent the Glacier Institute in its mission and goals.
  2. Provide quality customer service to all guests.
  3. Supervise youth overnight in bunkhouses no more than three times a week during camps in June-August.
  4. Co-lead students ages 7-16, on day, multi-day, overnight field-based outdoor education programs, and day hikes. Co-leading backpacking trips is an option.
  5. Aid OES in group management on catalog courses and day hikes.
  6. Monitor students during meals and free time.
  7. Participate in daily/weekly housekeeping and cleaning tasks.
  8. Display confidence and comfort working in adverse environmental conditions (snow, rain, 0 F-100 F temperatures, mosquitoes/ticks, hazardous wildlife, etc.).
  9. Other duties as assigned. 

Professional Development:
  1. Develop a thorough understanding of Glacier National Park and the Crown of the Continent Ecosystem including the natural and geologic history, land use management, cultural history, and much more!
  2. Gain experience teaching and developing interactive, field-based educational curriculum.
  3. Develop and deliver an educational program.
  4. Gain valuable experience and tools for managing students’ safety.
  5. In-depth bear and wildlife safety training will be provided.

Candidate Qualifications:
Education
  1. At least one (1) year of undergraduate education OR the equivalent in experience, with a thorough understanding of natural sciences. 

Skills and abilities
  1. Exceptional communication skills
  2. Detail oriented 
  3. Ability to carry a 25 pound day pack and hike up to 8 miles.
  4. Self-motivated with the ability to efficiently work independently with little instruction or supervision.
  5. Ability to work and live in remote, off-grid locations with no cell-phone service or immediate emergency services.

Compensation and Details:
  1. $200 / month.
  2. On-site housing for employees is provided, WiFi is available for staff.
  3. 2024 Employee entrance pass into Glacier and Waterton National Parks.
  4. Four day work week to allow individuals time to enjoy Glacier National Park.
  5. Participation in expert-led Glacier Institute catalog courses.
  6. Friends and family discounts for all Glacier Institute courses (subject to availability).
