POSITION DESCRIPTION:  Temporary Avian Technician 
 
General Job Description:  This is a highly responsible avian technician position based out of the Savannah River Ecology Lab (SREL). The incumbent is responsible for assisting a current University of Georgia PhD student and full-time technician with avian field research on location at the Savannah/Hilton International Airport. The technician will be assisting with the capture, trapping, and handling of various raptor, vulture, and wading bird species for GPS unit attachment. The technician may also assist with avian point count surveys on airport property. Responsibilities can also include performing routine maintenance for research equipment and helping with other research-related activities as requested. This position is for approximately 8 months. 

Core Competencies: 
1)    Assists with field research related to the investigation of avian flight behavior in study species at southeastern airports 
 
2)    Careful and accurate data collection/entry/management - detail oriented is a necessity 
 
3)    Assists graduate student and advisor with ongoing research involving animal-aircraft collisions 
 
4)    Provides assistance as needed with capture, trapping, and processing of avian species 
 
Preferred Qualifications: 
1)    Avian mist-netting, trapping, and banding experience are highly desirable 
2)    Great organization and communication skills 
3)    Uphold ethical standards of data collection  
4)    Ability to identify southeastern bird species
