About the DNR Fish and Wildlife Division: 
The Division of Fish & Wildlife enriches the quality of life for present and future generations by balancing the biological, ecological, recreational, and economic benefits of Indiana’s fish, wildlife, and their habitats. The Avian Health Surveillance Coordinator will work within the Fish & Wildlife Health Program in the DNR Division of Fish & Wildlife. The Indiana DNR Fish & Wildlife Health Program monitors and responds to fish and wildlife health events throughout the state. The program works closely with internal and external partners to achieve their goals. 
 
Salary Statement:  
The salary for this position is $16.80/hour. 
 
Role Overview:  
The Avian Health Surveillance Coordinator will aid the Avian Health Specialist in the surveillance and response to fish and wildlife disease events and mortalities. The successful candidate will also help in research project directed at measuring the health of waterfowl across a pollution gradient. In addition, the Avian Health Surveillance Coordinator will perform an important role in assisting the avian health biologist with the preparation of occupational safety standards for people who work in a field that directly contacts wildlife. 

A Day in the Life: 
The essential functions of this role are as follows:  
  • Work closely with a biologist to create and distribute occupational health and safety guidelines for staff interacting directly with wild animals. 
  • Assist in the surveillance and response to wildlife health issues in Indiana. 
  • Collect, prepare, and ship biological samples to appropriate diagnostic facilities. 
  • Monitor and respond to sick and dead wildlife reports.  
  • Aid research biologists in the collection and entry of data. 

Qualifications:  
  • High School diploma or equivalent required, some college preferred.  
  • Have a valid Indiana driver’s license.  
  • Ability to carry out assignments with general instruction and limited supervision.  
  • Ability to understand and apply through on-the-job training and using previous, relevant experience basic biological principles.  
  • Ability to gather and compile program materials.  
  • Ability to communicate effectively via phone, email, and in-person.  
  • Ability to operate effectively in a group decision-making process.  
  • Tact in dealing with other agency personnel and the public.  
  • Ability to lift equipment, tools, or materials up to 50lbs.  
  • This position may include in-state and local travel up to 50% of the time.  
  • This seasonal position does not offer benefits and is limited to 180 working days in an eleven (11) month continuous period.

Location: 
This job position will be located at the Mitchell Field Office in Mitchell, IN located in the south-central part of the state. 

What You'll Need for Success: 
You must meet the following requirement to be considered for employment:  
  • A general understanding of botany, ecology, biology, and zoology.  
  • Ability to conduct investigations, surveys, and collection of data, including the ability to deal with unprecedented situations.  
  • Ability to analyze samples using various types of equipment and procedures.  
  • Ability to operate and maintain equipment. 
  • Ability to collect biological samples. 
  • Excellent oral & written communication skills.  
  • Ability to learn to use statistical packages and other software (e.g., ArcGIS) for data analysis and data retrieval.  
  • Possess great organizational skills with the ability to prioritize variable workloads and multiple projects.  
  • Ability to maintain cooperative work relationships with other staff and external partners/cooperators.  
  • Must have or be able to obtain an Indiana driver’s license.  
 
Supervisory Responsibilities/Direct Reports: 
This role does not have supervisory responsibilities.
