Description
What you'll be doing:
This permanent seasonal Fish and Wildlife Technician 2 position located in Haines, Alaska serves as part of a 3-member crew on the semi-remote Chilkat Lake Salmon Stock Assessment Project. Duties include installing, maintaining, and removing the Chilkat Lake salmon weir, identifying and enumerating salmon escapement with a Dual-frequency Identification Sonar (DIDSON) system operated in conjunction with a standard picket weir, and collecting ages, sex, and length data from adult sockeye salmon via daily beach seining events. The project site is accessed by jet boat, and crew will share a camp consisting of wall tents and a main cabin while on duty.

Who we are looking for:
  • Experience with field work, specifically at a weir or other fish counting system
  • Experience identifying, capturing, and handling adult salmon
  • Ability to perform physically demanding work and withstand inclement weather
  • Experience living and working independently in remote settings for long periods under minimal supervision 
  • Experience working and living in bear country with knowledge of wildlife safety and ability to operate firearms 
  • Experience maintaining and operating small skiffs, specifically with jet outboard motors, in shallow, fast-moving glacial water
  • Experience collecting biological data, and entering and editing project data into corresponding databases

Special Note:
  • Valid Driver's license is required
  • Ability to effectively handle firearms is required 
  • Exposure to wild animals, insects, inclement weather, low level flying, travel by boat or skiff, or contact with drugs and chemicals may occur  
  • Transportation, housing, and food are supplied by the department while on duty in the field
  • Housing may consist of bunkhouses, dry cabins, vessels, or wall tents
  • Position is expected to be staffed 5 months annually from mid-May through mid-October
