Seasonal Wildlife Field Technician

Description

Herpetological Resource and Management (HRM) is seeking well-organized, responsible, adaptable, and dedicated professionals to join our team. Currently, we are seeking multiple seasonal full-time employees to assist with inventory, monitoring, wildlife clearance, and habitat restoration work focused on amphibians and reptiles throughout Michigan. Successful applicant(s) will also assist with long-term turtle conservation work. Preference will be given to applicants with previous herp-specific field work.

Applicants for the Wildlife Field Technician position must have availability from early April through the end of September, with the possibility of extended employment till October depending on the project requirements and job performance. A typical work schedule can be 5 eight-hour shifts or 4 ten-hour shifts, with variable schedules per project, scope, and weather conditions. Some weekend work required but balanced. Paid time off (PTO) is provided. Time off requests are limited during the active season due to project scope and blackout periods apply.

Required Qualifications

· B.S. degree or higher in biology, zoology, wildlife ecology, natural resource conservation, or equivalent experience.

· Demonstrated ability to identify Michigan amphibians and reptiles by sight and/or call or with the aid of field guides.

· Experience and aptitude operating handheld electronic equipment, such as digital cameras, GPS (handheld units such as Garmin and Trimble), radios, tablets, etc.

· Strong work ethic and accountability.

· Excellent listening, written, and verbal communication skills.

· Strong organizational and time management skills and attention to detail.

·Ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality.

·Ability to work efficiently with minimal supervision.

· Ability and desire to work effectively individually and as part of a team.

· Ability to work out of town with overnight stays, work in inclement weather, and work on holidays and weekends.

· Willing to relocate close to office or jobsite.

· Ability to work outdoors for 8-10 hours, under harsh conditions and extreme temperatures and collect accurate data in the field.

·Ability to work alone in field conditions.

· Physical capability and endurance to conduct fieldwork walking up to 5 miles over moderate terrain, including the ability to carry up to 30 lbs.

· Possess a driver’s license, safe driving record, and reliable means of transportation to and from the office and construction-style job sites and driving long distances.

· Other duties as assigned by Supervisor, Project Manager, or others as needed to successfully complete the project deliverable or meet internal goals.

Preferred Qualifications

· One year professional experience conducting wildlife surveys using standard field sampling techniques.

· GIS and database management experience preferred.

Compensation

Compensation range is $2,700-3,000/per month based on experience with opportunity for advancement. This is a seasonal salaried position. Mileage reimbursements are provided for fieldwork required driving; PTO is provided along with 401(k) and Medical Benefit options available to full-time employees and seasonal staff meeting minimum requirements.
