Seasonal Part-time Chelonian Conservation Husbandry Technician Intern
Description
HRM is looking for an organized, observant, responsible person to join our team. Currently, we are seeking a seasonal part-time intern to assist with the care of native and rare turtles and tortoises associated with assurance colonies, headstarting, and conservation programs.  
The job involves: 
·         Maintaining the quality and health of our animals, including providing their food and water and ensuring their environment is clean. 
·         Observing, documenting, and reporting animal health and behavior and record keeping. 
·         Sanitize animal rooms, enclosures, equipment, workspace and support areas by using appropriate techniques to promote animal health & welfare and to comply with policies. Care may include specialized, non-conventional areas of the facility. 
·         Assist in assessment of animal health status by gathering and documenting data and observing animals in their environment to detect and report abnormal conditions. 
·         Handle, restrain and transport animals by using appropriate techniques to allow for the care and research to be performed in a safe and humane manner. 
·         Sanitize, organize, and maintain animal cages and equipment. 
·         Maintain records by collecting and recording data to facilitate management of the facility. 
·         Assist with treatments and during special procedures by acting under the direction of others to facilitate research activities. 
·         Performs routine duties generally associated with grounds work, including, but not limited to, mowing, edging, watering, planting, and trimming foliage, preparing, and maintaining gardens for animal feeding and invasive species management associated with habitat restoration. 
·         Assists in the routine care and maintenance of common areas including walkways and parking area. 
·         Identifies remodeling, repair and construction needs of the animal room and facility. 
·         Attend in-house training classes to become more knowledgeable in husbandry and natural history. 
·         Other responsibilities, including restocking of supplies, 6s standards, or other projects as assigned may be required. 
·         Proactively communicate challenges, successes, and failures to leadership. 
·         Perform other duties as assigned. 
The ideal candidate for this job would: 
·         Have experience with reptiles and strong interest in managing a group of captive collections. 
·         Veterinary clinic experience a plus. 
·         Experience in exhibitory design and construction preferred. 
·         Horticultural background encouraged. 
Details 
·         $ 1,500 monthly stipend
·         The office is situated between Jackson and Chelsea, Michigan 
·         Weekend work may occur occasionally. 
·         Be willing to work approximately 30 hours or more each week (between 8am and 6:30pm Monday-Friday with occasional weekends). 
Required Qualifications 
·         2 years into a bachelor’s degree or higher in biology, zoology, wildlife ecology, natural resource conservation, or a related field. 
·         Demonstrated experience with animal husbandry (preferably with reptiles). 
·         Strong organizational and time management skills and attention to detail. 
·         Possess a driver’s license and have a reliable means of transportation to and from the office. 
·         Strong work ethic and self-motivated.   
·         Ability to lift and carry up to fifty (50) pounds. 
·         Ability to stand for extended periods of time. 
·         Strong attention to detail. 
·         Comfortable working in a fast-paced, ever-changing environment. 
·         Local to the area or willing to relocate as this role is onsite
