Description
The Weecology lab at the University of Florida has an opening for at least two image annotators to join our team. We use airborne imagery across multiple research programs to monitor forests, wading bird colonies, and future work on pelagic bird biodiversity surveys. The technician will perform a wide array of image annotation tasks including tree detection in urban environments, tree crown delineation in forest environments, identifying birds to species, and quantifying bird behaviors.

Ideal candidates will be able to work effectively remotely with a history of responsibility and attention to detail. Experience in natural history is helpful, as well as basic knowledge of bird biology and bird identification. Previous experience working with wildlife imagery or airborne data and associated software (e.g. Label Studio, Zooniverse, Agisoft Photoscan, Adobe, Photoshop, Image J) is helpful, but not required. Our lab has a proven track record in developing machine learning datasets for ecology. Your work will be valued and used by scientists around the world contributing to biodiversity monitoring with a global reach.

The position will last throughout 2024 with an opportunity for extension into 2025 upon review. The technician salary will be $20/hr. Optimal candidates will be able to split time between tree and bird annotation tasks to reduce attention fatigue. Remote work is fully supported; computer and other home office equipment will be provided, as needed. Or working space at our lab on the UF campus is available, if desired.

At Weecology, we are committed to supporting and training a diverse scientific workforce. Current and former group members encompass a variety of racial and ethnic backgrounds from the U.S. and other countries, members of the LGBTQIA+ community, military veterans, and people with disabilities. We work hard to create a supportive and inclusive lab environment and expect all members of Weecology to abide by the lab code of conduct (https://www.weecology.org/lab-wiki/code-of-conduct/). For local candidates and UF students, additional opportunities for engagement on research projects and fieldwork is possible depending on interest. The technician will be invited to participate in weekly lab meetings and other professional development activities if interested.
