This is an entry level position with opportunity to grow in the future.

Our Oyster Technicians are supervised by the KAOC Vice President and Farm Manager. The employee in this role should be able to effectively follow direction and complete tasks as assigned. Candidates should be comfortable working as a part of a team, out on the bay, in all weather conditions. Days will often entail leaving the dock early in the morning and not returning until early- to mid-afternoon. This position exposes employees to an array of duties on the farm including, but not limited to: receiving seed orders and gear delivery, moving cages, assembling gear, cleaning, grading/sorting, harvesting, and biofouling control. Most tasks are physically demanding; there should be no aversion to outdoor manual labor. Must be able to lift 60 lbs. Must pass a background check from TPWD. Paid training. Pay based on experiences.

This is a new industry for Texas, so this is an opportunity to learn the skills to be a successful oyster farmer. Candidates are not expected to know about oyster aquaculture, but must be willing to learn and retain the knowledge. Previous experiences with oyster aquaculture, on-water work, or experience with boats are a plus.

Specific responsibilities:
  • Monitor general shellfish health, growth, and inventory and notify Crew Chief or Assistant Farm Manager if any concerns arise
  • Harvest, sort, wash, and pack oysters in fulfillment of orders per direction of KAOC managers
  • Build, install, and repair oyster aquaculture gear and infrastructure
  • Accurately measure and fill oysters into correct size bags and place on lease.
  • Operate power tools
  • Assist with tracking maintenance, repairs, safety issues, and other issues to be resolved, and report up the chain of command, as needed
  • Tumble and grade oysters using tumbler
  • Carry out biofouling management plan by flipping cages per direction of KAOC managers.
  • Sink and raise gear in accordance with our hurricane plan.
  • Uphold sanitation and safety regulations within the processing center and on the water.
  • Identify when a site is not maintained according to regulations and alert Crew Chief or Assistant Farm Manager
  • Take accountability for actions and learn from them.
  • Maintain a clean/organized workspace

Requirements:
  • Positive attitude, willing to learn, and willing to work hard.
  • Able to pass background check
  • Able to swim
  • Be available and flexible for work outside of 8 hours or 5 days a week
  • Able to lift 60 lbs
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Able to comply with all KAOC standards and policies.
  • Able to take direction from supervisors and senior team members.
  • Able work through a variety of weather conditions

Schedule:
  • 8-10 hours, Monday to Friday
  • 12-hour days on occasion
  • Weekend work as needed for weather make-up days and farm maintenance

Education:
  • High school or equivalent (Preferred)

License/Certification:
  • Driver's License (Required)

Compensation:
  • $17/hr
  • Negotiable based on experience
