Description
We are seeking three (3) technicians to assist one (1) PhD student with a project focusing on wild turkey reproductive ecology in western Kentucky. Field work is expected to start January 6, 2025 and run through the last week of July 2025. The project specifically focuses on the reproductive ecology of wild turkeys on a matrix of public and private lands in western Kentucky. This position includes both field work (90%) and office/data assignments (10%). The role of the technician will be assisting with turkey trapping, radio telemetry, habitat sampling, deployment/monitoring of trail cameras, deployment/monitoring of ARUs, data recording and processing. To accomplish these tasks, technicians will work both independently and as part of a small crew.
Due to the nature of live capture and tracking of wildlife, the applicant must be able to work a flexible schedule, with weekends and holidays possible depending on weather and data collection needs. The applicant must be able to work well in a team setting and get along well with others as the chosen candidate will live alongside coworkers in close quarters. During capture (Jan-Mar) and brood rearing seasons (June-July), candidates are often required to lift over 30lbs and work long hours in challenging conditions (un-even terrain, humidity, heat, cold, etc.).
Research will be conducted near Muhlenberg County, Kentucky. Bowling Green lies 45 minutes east and major cities such as Nashville, TN and Louisville, KY are approximately 2 hours away. Shared housing (no pets) and field vehicles will be provided.
Qualifications: Applicants must have a valid driver’s license. Preference will be given to applicants that have a B.S. in wildlife ecology or related field. Competitive candidates will be expected to: (1) Have strong work ethic and interpersonal skills. (2) Work early mornings, late nights and weekends when necessary. (3) Have previous experience with radio telemetry and wildlife tracking. (4) Have previous field experience that includes animal capture and tagging. (5) Have experience with vegetation sampling and surveys.
To Apply: Applicants should send via email a single .pdf document (with the subject line titled: Wild Turkey Tech) containing a cover letter that details interest for the project, a CV, as well as contact information for three (3) references. Applications will be reviewed as they are received and you are encouraged to apply early.
