Description
Rookery Bay Sea Turtle Program Internship Posting 2026

About: Rookery Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve is 110,000 acres of primarily coastal and estuarine habitats, stretching from downtown Naples to the greater Ten Thousand Islands. The Reserve provides a basis for informed stewardship of estuaries in Southwest Florida through research and education. The Reserve is managed by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection's Coastal Office in cooperation with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and Florida International University. Additional support is provided by the non-profit Friends of Rookery Bay.

Description: Rookery Bay Research Reserve is a foraging ground to three listed species of sea turtles, the Kemp’s ridley (Lepidochelys kempii), Atlantic green (Chelonia mydas), and the loggerhead (Caretta caretta). The loggerhead is the most common species of sea turtle that nests along Reserve beaches. Rookery Bay Research Reserve staff, interns and volunteers conduct morning nest surveys along barrier island beaches to locate and cage nests, protecting them from predation by raccoons and other species. They then document the number of hatched eggs to get a better understanding of nesting success.

Friends of Rookery Bay is seeking interns to assist Rookery Bay Research Reserve staff to monitor nesting activity and hatching success along the Cape Romano Complex and the Ten Thousand Islands, contributing to a multi-year data set. The interns will be responsible for safe boating practices while accessing remote barrier islands to conduct morning nesting surveys five days a week. They will be responsible for scheduling and supervising volunteers. The interns will also work closely with Friends of Rookery Bay to assist with the Adopt-A-Nest program. The interns will also present the results of the 2026 nest monitoring efforts at the Rookery Bay NERR Environmental Learning Center for the staff, volunteers, and donors.

Qualifications:
  • Recent graduates or graduating seniors with a bachelor’s degree in an environmental science related field
  • Ability to operate boats in coastal/estuarine environments is preferred but not required

  • Strong communication skills
  • Ability to engage professionally with the public

Description
PROJECT BACKGROUND Delta Waterfowl, in partnership with the Louisiana Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit and Louisiana State University, is seeking a motivated student to undertake a master’s degree project to conduct applied research on moistsoil management strategies at the historic Delta Marsh in Manitoba, Canada. Located on the south shore of Lake Manitoba, Delta Marsh is one of North America’s most storied wetland research sites. In 1979, Delta Waterfowl and Ducks Unlimited Canada established the Marsh Ecology Research Project (MERP), which includes 10 contiguous, 5-hectare wetland cells. Each cell is equipped with dikes and water control structures that allow independent water-level management in each of the 10 cells.

The successful applicant will use these MERP cells to test how different water management strategies, herbicide applications, and soil manipulations affect soil salinity, vegetation diversity, and vegetation density. Findings from this work will contribute directly to improved wetland management and waterfowl conservation in northern marshes.

The successful student will work closely with scientists from Delta Waterfowl and Louisiana State University. Fieldwork will begin in late April 2026 at the Delta Marsh in Manitoba, and coursework will commence at Louisiana State University in August 2026.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS • B.S. in biology, ecology, wildlife management or a related field • Ability to meet admission requirements for Louisiana State University • Strong commitment to conducting high-quality, team-based research

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS • Previous experience with moist-soil management or wetland habitat studies • Experience identifying wetland vegetation and/or conducting vegetation surveys • Familiarity with waterfowl surveys or habitat-use assessments • Proficiency with data management and statistical software (e.g., R) • Experience operating tractors, ATVs, or water management equipment • Demonstrated ability to work independently in field conditions

Contact Dr. Drew Fowler (dfowler@agcenter.lsu.edu ), Dr. Andrew Nyman (jnyman@lsu.edu), or Dr. Frank Rohwer (frohwer@deltawaterfowl.org) for more information. To apply, submit a single PDF including a cover letter, CV, academic transcripts, and reference contacts to Dr. Fowler.

Sierra Nevada Inventory & Monitoring Office (Three Rivers, California)
Description
The Research Associate Program at GBI, in cooperation with NPS at the Sierra Nevada Network (SIEN), is recruiting one (1) Forest Ecologist to support long-term monitoring of high-elevation whitebark and foxtail pine forests in Sierra Nevada national parks. The Forest Research Associate will serve as the project lead for annual field operations, overseeing logistics, safety planning, crew coordination, and data management for the backcountry monitoring effort. The position ensures that field protocols are implemented accurately and consistently, that crews are well trained and supported, and that data meet SIEN’s scientific and quality standards.

Working closely with SIEN and park staff, the Forest Ecologist will plan field schedules, prepare equipment and navigation resources, provide on-the-ground training, and accompany crews into the backcountry to verify proper data collection. The incumbent will also manage data entry, QA/QC, and reporting, and act as the primary point of contact for questions related to fieldwork, logistics, and protocol interpretation.

Overview of project
The SIEN High Elevation Forest Monitoring project is a long-term effort to assess the condition and trends of whitebark and foxtail pine ecosystems across Sierra Nevada national parks. These high-elevation, five-needle white pines are foundational species that are increasingly threatened by blister rust, mountain pine beetle outbreaks, climate change, and other ecological stressors. The project collects detailed data on tree health, mortality, regeneration, pathogen presence, and other indicators to fill critical information gaps about the status of these sensitive timberline forests. By producing consistent, repeatable monitoring data, the project provides park managers and partners with the scientific foundation needed to understand ecosystem change, support conservation planning, and protect the resilience of high-elevation forests in the Sierra Nevada.

Primary Responsibilities:
  • Lead annual field operations for SIEN’s High Elevation Forest Monitoring program, including planning, logistics, scheduling, and day-to-day coordination of backcountry work.
  • Train, mentor, and support seasonal field crews to ensure safe practices and accurate implementation of monitoring protocols, species identification, navigation, and data entry.
  • Conduct in-field oversight by accompanying crews on backcountry trips to verify protocol adherence, troubleshoot challenges, and ensure high-quality data collection.
  • Manage and QA/QC all collected data, including spatial, photographic, and species identification data, ensuring accuracy, completeness, and proper archiving.
  • Prepare maps, field materials, equipment, and navigation resources; maintain communication with SIEN and park contacts regarding progress, issues, and operational needs.
  • Contribute to reporting and project deliverables by summarizing field results, supporting data interpretation, and coordinating with interdisciplinary staff to meet project objectives.

Timeline:
  • February 2026 – November 2026, 41 weeks with possibility of extension.
  • Full time (40 hours/week).
  • Schedule: Office days will normally be Monday through Friday, 8 hours/day. During summer field season, schedule will be variable. Trips with field crew could be 10-hour days/8 days on and 6 days off.

Location:
This position will be based out of the NPS Sierra Nevada Inventory & Monitoring office located near Ash Mt District in the foothills of Sequoia NP. The closest town to Ash Mt. is Three Rivers (pop. 2,500) which is a 15-minute drive from the office/housing.  Three Rivers has two small food markets, a few convenience stores, several gift and specialty shops, many motels, a doctor’s office, post office, a bank with an ATM machine, a credit union, 2 coffee shops, about 7 restaurants, a bar, and a microbrewery.  The closest sizeable town is Visalia (about 60 minutes from Ash Mt.).  Visalia has many large grocery stores and department stores, movie theaters, auto mechanics, etc.  Fresno and Bakersfield are the closest cities with airports.

Three Rivers is extremely hot and dry in summer, with daytime temperatures often exceeding 110°F. However, backcountry field locations often occur at high elevation locations where freezing temperatures or summer snowstorms are even possible.
