Position Summary
The Curator/Collections Manager is a Center for Environmental Management of Military Lands (CEMML) Team member and Colorado State University employee that will be stationed in Fort Polk, Louisiana. Fort Polk is located in west-central Louisiana among the longleaf pine forests of the Kisatchie National Forest.  
 
The Curator/Collections Manager will provide the guidance and support necessary to assist the Fort Polk Conservation Branch (CB) in implementing curation guidelines of the Integrated Cultural Resources Management Plan (ICRMP) and 36 CFR 79 (Curation of Federally owned or Administered Archaeological Collections). The Curator/Collections Manager will coordinate with the Cultural Resource Manager (CRM) and the Lead Archaeologist (CEMML Supervisor) to ensure program consistency in accordance with Federal regulations.  
 
Duties/Responsibilities include:
• Duties and responsibilities include the following:  
• Responsible for the maintenance and operation of the Fort Polk Cultural Resources Curation Facility as directed by the CRM.  
• Maintain a facility usage schedule for the Environmental Learning Center Building and for equipment maintenance. 
• Responsible for all artifact processing and laboratory analysis of archaeological artifact collections recovered on Fort Polk lands and ensure that all artifacts and related materials are properly curated in accordance with 36 CFR 79.  
• Assist with execution aspects of the ICRMP activities and projects to include program coordination, fieldwork, and office work in accordance with approved Standard Operating Procedure (SOP). 
• Actively participate in a number of other CR-related activities such as public outreach and education, equipment upkeep, historical research, ICRMP implementation, oral history recording and compilation, site protection, technical reviewing, Regulatory Compliance assistance, Native American Heritage support.  
• Decision making needs for this position include: 
In coordination with the CRM, this position is responsible for decisions pertaining to curation activities at Fort Polk. 
• Capable of making independent decisions relating to safety while performing job duties (i.e. not going around a live fire barricade, not climbing metal ladder during a lightning storm, wearing personal protective equipment, and adhering to safety protocols).   
• Capable of improvising while conducting job duties to prevent delays (i.e. making temporary repairs to equipment with improvised materials and re-prioritizing daily activities in relation to military activities in the field).   
• Prioritize project goals and tasks to achieve an annual work plan/schedule.  
 
Minimum Requirements
• B.A. in Anthropology, Archaeology, Historic Preservation, Cultural Resources Management, or closely related field  
• Two years of post-graduation cultural resources experience with curation tasks. 
• Demonstrated knowledge of archaeological laboratory methodologies, archaeological curation procedures, and artifact collections management.  
• Proficient with Microsoft Office suite (MS Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams) and Adobe Acrobat..
 
Preferred Requirements
• M.A. in Anthropology, Archaeology, Historic Preservation, Cultural Resources Management, or closely related field.  
• Prior experience in execution of archaeological tasks. 
• Experience in technical reporting. 
• Knowledge of the archaeology of Louisiana or the southeast. 
• Prior experience conducting cultural resource management on military lands. 
• Previous experience being responsible for a Curation Facility in compliance with 36 CFR 79.

• Assist with compliance reviews related to NHPA, NEPA, NAGPRA, ARPA, and other cultural resources regulations.
• Review and edit reports, site forms, and SOPs; compile data for annual ICRMP updates and reporting.
• Collaborate with the CRM on archaeological projects and public outreach events (e.g., Archaeology Month, Native American Heritage Month).
• Manage the Cultural Resources GIS data input, organization, and cataloging to support accurate and accessible cultural resources mapping.
Position is contingent on funding.

• This position supervises 1 Curator/Collections Manager, 1 Field Archaeologist, and any temporary hourly employees and volunteers.

• Duties and responsibilities include assisting the CRM with coordination of the Fort Polk Cultural Resources Program, including with outside entities such as archaeological contractors and the State Historic Preservation Office, US Forest Service, National Park Service, and other federal agencies, as well as all installation entities whose activities may involve impacts to cultural resources. Additionally, the Lead CRM Archaeologist must provide expert advice on compliance with all regulatory drivers and interactions with federally recognized tribes, and coordinate, prepare and execute events associated with Native American Heritage Month. The Lead Archaeologist serves as the GIS Specialist. Other duties include revising and maintaining the Fort Polk Integrated Cultural Resources Management Plan (ICRMP) on an annual basis and oversee the development of the next five-year ICRMP.
• The Lead CRM Archaeologist will update State of Louisiana archaeological site forms and deliver them to the CRM for further coordination with the State Historic Preservation Office. The employee must attend meetings and conduct up to twelve special cultural resource briefings for the ENRMD at Fort Polk, and actively participate in a number of other CR-related activities such as public outreach and education, equipment upkeep, historical research, ICRMP implementation, oral history recording and compilation, site protection, technical reviewing, Regulatory Compliance assistance, Native American Heritage support. This position may support special events and requests which includes special projects, tours for veteran soldiers, reports, and other support functions.
• Complete GIS data input, consolidation, organization, and cataloging. Develop map products as needed for deliverables and for federal partners.
• Collaborate with the CRM and participate in meetings, briefings, presentations, and administrative tasks related to the ICRMP. Assist with reporting requirements and be prepared to serve as a lead representative to meet project objectives.
• Assist with inventory of Program equipment, hand receipts, and key control protocols. Appropriately maintain equipment, vehicles, and facilities.
• Serve as a team member and inspector for the Installation’s Maneuver Damage Program. Includes performing maneuver damage inspections after training events and major training rotations to determine the extent, location, and degree of natural resources damage.
 
 
Minimum Requirements
• M.S./M.A. in Anthropology, Archaeology, Historic Preservation, Cultural Resources Management, or closely related field 
• Two (2) years of professional work experience with cultural resource projects and/or programs including execution of field work, oversight of laboratory processing and artifact analysis, site mapping, and final report generation.
• Professional work experience with ESRI’s suite of software including ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Online, ArcGIS Collector/Field Maps, ArcGIS Survey123, or similar mobile and desktop GIS applications or be able to attend GIS professional development training if funding is available.
• Ability to perform strenuous fieldwork in rugged terrain and weather extremes.
• Must have a valid driver’s license or the ability to obtain a driver’s license by the employment start date.
• The successful candidate must be legally authorized to work in the U.S. by proposed start date; CEMML will not provide visa sponsorship for this position.
 
Preferred Requirements
• Prior experience in management of cultural resource projects and/or programs including all aspects of planning, logistical support, execution of field work, oversight of laboratory processing and artifact analysis, site mapping, and final report generation.
• Three years of experience using GIS tools and producing maps for cultural resource projects and/or programs. This includes creating, maintaining, and editing geodatabases, conducting spatial analyses (vector and raster), and georeferencing/geometry replacement. This also includes experience using ESRI apps such as Survey123, Field Maps, and Dashboards.
• Demonstrated knowledge of federal historic preservation legislation.
• Demonstrated knowledge of techniques for excavation, artifact identification, artifact analyses, site mapping, technical report writing, and GPS use.
• Knowledge of the archaeology of Louisiana or the southeast.
• Prior experience conducting cultural resource management on military lands.

Description

Position Overview
The Pauli Lab at the University of Wisconsin-Madison is looking for two temporary technicians to conduct winter small mammal trapping in the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest of northern Wisconsin. This work is in support of a collaborative effort between UW Madison, the Great Lakes Indian Fish and Wildlife Commission, the US Forest Service, and the Wisconsin DNR, which seeks to identify factors affecting small mammal abundance and community composition across the northern Great Lakes region.

Job Duties
Each technician will independently manage a series of Sherman-trap grids located in two different sections of the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest. Field work will consist primarily of measuring snow conditions and handling, identifying, tagging, and collecting morphometric data from small mammals. Successful applicants will also be responsible for data entry, basic equipment maintenance, sustaining communication with project leads, and other duties as needs arise.

Successful applicants should be comfortable working alone or with support from the project lead or our partner agencies. This position will require a flexible schedule and many early mornings. Wisconsin winters can be frigid and work may occasionally occur in temperatures as low as -15F. Accordingly, candidates with experience living or working in cold winter conditions will be strongly preferred.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Availability for the entire period
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule with early mornings. 
  • Ability to work alone with little oversight as well as to work effectively with collaborators from diverse backgrounds.
  • Comfort using GPS to navigate to and within field sites
  • Valid US Driver’s License

Job Description
The Hogan Lab in the Department of Ecology and Conservation Biology at Texas A&M seeks a full-time tree census team leader, technician, and field manager.  This full-time, hourly-paid position is employed through AgriLife Research.  It is available starting in January 2026 and extending through July 2026, with the possibility of extension based on funding and work performance. The lab studies forest community ecology, including tree demography and growth, and responses to disturbance and climate change.

The main research site is the Cooks Branch Conservancy near Montgomery, TX; however, the individual will occasionally need to work on the Texas A&M campus.  Housing may be provided at Cooks Branch on a needs basis.
Responsibilities:
* Performing forest measurements and identification of trees
* Supervision management and transportation of a team of tree census volunteers
* Communicating with Dr. Hogan  and Cooks Branch Conservancy Staff
* Organizing and managing data collection and storage
* Assistance in planning and organizing group activities for tree census volunteers
* Collecting of herbarium specimens

Required Education and Experience:
-High school diploma or equivalent combination of education and experience.
-Two years of related experience.

* A BS degree or higher in biology, ecology, botany, forestry, or a related field

Dr. Aaron Hogan's Forest Dynamics Lab in the Department of Ecology and Conservation Biology at Texas A&M University seeks post-baccalaureate volunteer tree census interns to help establish a large, permanent forest dynamics plot.

DESCRIPTION: An initial tree census of the 20-Ha Cooks Branch Forest Dynamics Plot in the Cooks Branch Conservancy, near Montgomery, Texas (about an hour southeast of Texas A&M University at College Station), will be carried out in 2026. Volunteer post-bachelor's degree interns seeking field ecology experience will complete the tree census work over 6 months beginning mid-January 2026. After training in census protocols, tree identification, and data management standards, volunteers will work in the forest, measuring and mapping trees within marked grids. Volunteers work together in small groups under the supervision of a field technician, spending workdays in the field (8 am until 4 pm, Monday-Friday, with weekends free) in the outdoor conditions of the East Texas Piney Woods forest.

While in Texas, volunteers will have the opportunity to learn about diverse aspects of forest and savannah ecology, wildlife ecology, and conservation biology from scientists conducting research at Cooks Branch and at the Department of Ecology and Conservation Biology at Texas A&M University. Dr. Hogan and other research personnel will engage in capacity building and mentorship activities with interns.

PROBABLE DURATION: beginning January 15, 2025, with a tentative 6-month appointment (until July 15, 2026).

STIPEND: $1000 per month to cover food and general living expenses.

ACCOMMODATION: Living quarters for the tree census group will be provided in a field house at the Cooks Branch Conservancy, Montgomery. TX. Housing is communal, using shared resources. Transportation will be available.

TRAVEL: Reimbursement of up to $500 (250$ per one-way ticket, if ticket price exceeds 500$) towards a round-trip plane ticket from within the United States. 

NOTE: This is an unpaid internship to give post-bachelor's degree individuals hands-on experience in the field. We are unable to provide health insurance.

REQUIREMENTS: College graduates with excellent organizational skills and attention to detail, preferably with a background in biology, ecology, or environmental science, field-work experience, and knowledge of plant identification. Experience working in forests with tree/plant inventory is useful but not required. We are currently only considering US citizens and permanent US residents for these opportunities. Water right application reviews require utilization of Water Availability Models (WAMs) and/or extensive reviews of complex water right accounting plans.  
  • The position requires skilled communication to present technical or regulatory information to agency staff, water rights stakeholders, and the public. The position will provide advanced level support in public meetings, alternate dispute resolutions, and Commission agenda meetings and serve as an expert witness in contested case hearings.
  • Specifically, the position is responsible to:
  • Apply standard hydrologic practices and principles, the Water Rights Analysis Package (WRAP) and TCEQ’s Water Availability Models (WAMs), and statistical procedures to complete advanced hydrological reviews of surface water right applications.
  • Maintain and update TCEQ’s WAMs, and review WRAP and WAM contract deliverables.

The Restoration Team Lead must be highly collaborative and enjoy working within an environment that is mission and results-driven, and contribute to the mission of BCI, the HP&R program, and lasting, positive ecological change.

BCI is a distributed organization with staff across the United States. The Restoration Team Lead can live anywhere in the western US but will be directing and coordinating conservation projects across the US, heavily emphasizing the southwestern United States, particularly in New Mexico and Arizona, and thus being located in or willing to relocate to either of those states will be a bonus. 

Primary Responsibilities and Expectations

The Restoration Team Lead will lead, manage, and occasionally perform a variety of conservation activities that benefit bats and their habitats including, but not limited to: surveys of springs and seeps, restoration of various water and foraging resources, post-wildfire restoration of forested and desert landscapes, inventory, survey, restoration of historic buildings serving as roosts, conversion of abandoned mines with water to bat friendly wildlife drinkers, repopulating areas with wild agaves, restoration of roosting and foraging habitat in forest stands, maximizing such habitats through various techniques such as prescribed fire and selective thinning and fuel removals, cliff ecology work and the management of those habitats, environmental compliance to include all aspects of the NEPA process and, cultural resource surveys typically of Historic resources but also fielding other core areas of surveys as well, and participating in program and team certification and training. 

This position is ideal for a biologist, ecologist, natural resource manager, or conservationist with interest and experience conducting/managing restoration work across various landscapes, managing and coordinating collaborative projects, managing a diverse staff with a variety of skillsets, and communicating with various partners and stakeholders. A primary duty will be to develop and manage staff, workflows, partnerships, project work, grants and agreements, and internal and external collaboration to improve efficiency and increase opportunities coming into the team.


Position Description:

The Restoration Team Lead will:

·        Lead, supervise, and manage BCI’s Restoration Team focused on implementing restoration practices across landscapes to provide foraging habitat and drinking water resources for bat populations in a changing climate.
·        Lead partner communications and relationships relating to restoration.
·        Direct leadership, supervision and management of staff positions within the team.
·        Coordinate with the rest of HP&R, ESI, and Science on projects and development.
·        Management and participation in the environmental compliance tasks as a part of the NEPA process, including Cultural Resource Surveys
·        Management of conservation activities and crews working within the discipline of cliff ecology. 
·        Managing of processing data and photos collected during assessments and other conservation activities.
·        Develop restoration projects and partnerships in key focal areas and new areas.
·        Management and coordination of grant and agreement development.
 

Ideal Candidate Qualifications:

Required Knowledge/Experience

·        MS degree in a relevant field such as biology, ecology, wildlife, conservation, or a related field or a B.S. degree plus 8 years at least of relevant professional experience.
·        5+ years of experience leading teams and supervising staff.
·        Proficiency in written and verbal communication skills in English.

To be successful in this position requires strong skills in leadership, partnership development and maintenance, administration, and organization including time and information management. The ability to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing, and in promoting interpersonal relationships is a necessity in this position.  This position requires the use of computers for word processing, information management, and communications within shared working spaces such as SharePoint and Google Docs. Familiarity with ArcGIS is required, with the ability to create, edit, and analyze geospatial data and produce informative maps and reports. The person in position must be able to apply technical and scientific knowledge to the development and implementation of projects and issues; analyze, interpret, and explain complex technical issues regarding wildlife conservation activities; and interpret operational needs and develop integrated creative solutions. This position requires skill at time management and prioritization, the ability to elicit cooperation as necessary to achieve objectives and ensure proper completion of work assignments and program activities. This position requires moderately strenuous wildlife management and monitoring activities outdoors during hot, humid, and buggy conditions, sometimes during inclement weather. The ability to safely operate a variety of vehicles and equipment including GPS units, hand tools, power tools, 4WD vehicles, ATVs, trailers, and boats up to 19 feet is preferred.
 
Description of Duties:
  • Coordinate with internal and external stakeholders to implement the State Wildlife Action Plan.
  • Maintain awareness of agency and regional wildlife conservation priorities and work with potential Project Investigators to identify and develop potential projects that address these priorities.
  • Work within a team to develop priority projects through broad-based partner support that are designed to accomplish programmatic goals.
  • Lead teams through a conservation planning and prioritization process by identifying appropriate partners, facilitating project development, and securing resources to achieve goals.
  • Programmatic outreach through presentations, written communication including email, scientific and popular publication and website updates.
  • Provide technical and other assistance for wildlife research and monitoring, conservation coordination, and management projects.
  • Complete administrative duties such as vehicle reporting, purchase tracking, and travel forms in a timely manner.
