Description
We’re recruiting a PhD student to join the Watershed & Wildfires Research Collaborative (WWRC) at Utah State University starting in 2025. The WWRC is a multi-university collaborative with expertise spanning geomorphology, hydrology, fire ecology, engineering, data science, and modeling. You’ll work closely with my group at Utah State and Brendan Murphy (Simon Fraser), as well as other collaborators, Belize Lane, Larissa Yocom, and Jon Czuba (Virginia Tech) on basic and applied research at the forefront of climate resilience and wildfire science.

Two funded projects you could contribute to include:

  • Advancing watershed and wildfire proactive planning tools that predict burn severity, streamflow response, and erosion/sedimentation, with direct applications to forest, fire, and water management planning.
  • Developing geospatial and machine-learning tools to assess post-wildfire sediment hazards to transportation infrastructure.
Our goal is to improve how we anticipate, plan for, and manage wildfire-related risks across western landscapes. Simultaneously, we are working with stakeholder groups to change perceptions about the important role of wildfire in western US ecosystems. These projects offer myriad opportunities to publish impactful research, build technical skills, and engage with federal and state agency partners, private landowners, and non-profit organizations.

Watershed Sciences at USU has a supportive, collaborative culture and our group emphasizes developing both durable and technical skills while maintaining a healthy work-life balance. Logan, Utah is a gem of a mountain town—small enough to feel connected, big enough to have what you need, and surrounded by spectacular outdoor access year-round. This position is funded with a research assistantship of $27,000/year, plus tuition, fees, and health insurance.

If you’re excited by the intersection of wildfire, water, humans, and data, please get in touch! Reach out with a CV and a short note about your interests.

USDA Forest Service Office/Lab and Location: A research opportunity is available with the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) Forest Service (FS) within the Northeast Climate Hub at the Northern Research Station (NRS) based in Durham, New Hampshire.

At the heart of the USDA Forest Service's mission is their purpose. Everything they do is intended to help sustain forests and grasslands for present and future generations. Why? Because their stewardship work supports nature in sustaining life. This is the purpose that drives the agency’s mission and motivates their work across the agency. It’s been there from the agency’s very beginning, and it still drives them. To advance the mission and serve their purpose, the USDA Forest Service balances the short and long-term needs of people and nature by: working in collaboration with communities and our partners; providing access to resources and experiences that promote economic, ecological, and social vitality; connecting people to the land and one another; and delivering world-class science, technology and land management.

  • USDA Forest Service Northern Research Station: Deliver the best possible science on forests and related natural resources. We develop the knowledge and tools that landowners and land managers rely on to improve the health and productivity of the Nation’s forests and grasslands, and ultimately, improve the lives of the people we serve.
  • Climate Hub Vision: Robust and healthy agricultural production and natural resources under increasing climate variability and climate change.
  • Climate Hub Mission: Develop and deliver science-based, region-specific information and technologies to agricultural and natural resource managers, and communities, that enable climate-smart decision making, and to help implement those decisions. The Northeast Hub is building collaborations connecting stakeholders to climate-related resources and working to fill information gaps where needed.
Research Project: The ORISE Fellow will focus on a series of outreach materials to support producer productivity, resilience, risk reduction, and economically beneficial activities on farms and forests in the Northeast region. The team will define the scope and scale of agroforestry and other resilience strategies, communicate these results to our stakeholders, and collaborate with other scientists, other ORISE fellows, Hub leadership, and partners to determine potential solutions and pathways for optimizing productivity.

Learning Objectives: The Fellow will build skills in:

  • Building relationships with stakeholders
  • Guidance for producers
  • Creating educational materials
  • Synthesizing needs of stakeholders
  • Evaluating success of outreach
Mentor: The mentor for this opportunity is Erin Lane (erin.d.lane@usda.gov). If you have questions about the nature of the research, please contact the mentor.

Centro de Rescate de Especies Marinas Amenazadas (CREMA) operates a multifaceted approach for the conservation of endangered marine species at several beaches Southern Nicoya Peninsula, Costa Rica. In our sea turtle nesting program, which opens annually during the Olive Ridley nesting season (June – January), we conduct beach monitoring (night patrols and morning censuses), nest relocations into project hatcheries, environmental education activities, and help on the environmental awareness with the local and international community, that also helps on generating job opportunities for the locals and promoting sustainable tourism development. Olive Ridleys (Lepidochelys olivacea) is the most frequent and main species that nest on these beaches, but there is also sporadic nesting of Green (Chelonia mydas), Leatherback (Dermochelys coriacea), and Hawksbill (Eretmochelys imbricata) sea turtles. Egg poaching is a major threat to the nesting sea turtles on these beaches. Secondary threats include nest predation, plastic pollution, beach development and erosion, and tourist traffic. On the beaches, CREMA directs all our efforts to prevent and ultimately decrease these threats.
We operate a multifaceted approach for the conservation of sea turtles, including; applying several scientific methodologies on field, conduct beach patrols, hatchery management, conduct climate change impact protocols, develop environmental education activities, and awareness with the local community, generating job opportunities for the locals, and promoting sustainable tourism development. Research Assistants are responsible for assisting the project coordinator in all aspects of running the project. It is crucial that assistants bring a positive attitude to the project, work well within a team, be adaptable to a variety of situations, and be prepared to partake in ALL aspects of the project.
