Description
The James C. Kennedy Waterfowl and Wetlands Conservation Center at Clemson University is seeking a highly motivated Ph.D. or M.S. candidate to conduct research on materials for tidal trunks and other water control structures with the goal of developing alternative, cost-effective solutions for water level management in waterfowl impoundments in coastal South Carolina.

Water control structures are critical for effective wetland management. Historically, wooden tidal trunks had a life span of 25–30 years, but the discontinuation of chromate copper arsenate and creosote-treated lumber has reduced this to 8–10 years due to the use of pressure-treated lumber with alkaline copper quaternary preservatives. These trunks lose tensile strength from cyclic wetting and drying, salt crystal formation, decomposition, and insect colonization, with replacement costs reaching $20,000 to $25,000 each. Research is required to evaluate new materials and designs for tidal trunks while considering traditional design significance. The objectives of this study are to 1) inventory the number and characteristics of tidal trunks and other water control structures in South Carolina's coastal counties, 2) interview land managers and owners to evaluate critical and desirable design features of tidal trunks, 3) conduct a comprehensive literature review evaluating potential materials and designs, 4) document wildlife and invertebrate use of tidal trunks, 5) evaluate material performance, and 6) work with experienced tidal trunk builders to design, build, and install new prototypes.

The student will be working toward a graduate degree in Forest Resources, Biosystems Engineering, Environmental Engineering and Earth Sciences, or Civil Engineering at Clemson University. Clemson University (http://www.clemson.edu/about/) is a public land-grant Carnegie R1 Research University in a college town atmosphere on Lake Hartwell within view of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Students will take classes on the main campus and conduct fieldwork along South Carolina's coast at the Tom Yawkey Wildlife Center, the Baruch Institute of Coastal Ecology and Forest Science, located on the 16,000-acre Hobcaw Barony property, and other coastal locations.

The student will be advised by a multidisciplinary team comprised of Dr. Christophe Darnault (Environmental Engineering and Earth Sciences), Dr. Brunela Rodrigues (Wood Utilization and Biomaterials), Dr. Michael Stoner (Civil Engineering), and Dr. Jim Anderson (James C. Kennedy Waterfowl and Wetlands Conservation Center).

QUALIFICATIONS: B.S. (for M.S.) and M.S. (for Ph.D.) in Environmental or Civil Engineering, Materials Science, Wood Science, Forest Engineering, Environmental Science, or a closely related field. Minimum undergraduate GPA of 3.00. A strong interest and experience in engineering design, material science, and design software is crucial. Interest in environmental sustainability, historic preservation, wetlands, statistics, and publishing is a plus. A valid driver’s license and reliable transportation is required. Due to current visa restrictions imposed by the United States government, you must be a United States citizen to apply for this position.

Clemson University does not discriminate based on race, color, religion, sexual orientation, gender, pregnancy, national origin, age, or disability. We encourage applications from minorities, women, veterans, and all other qualified applicants.

STIPEND: $25,000 (Ph.D.) or $22,000 (M.S.) plus tuition waiver.

CONTACT: Interested individuals should email a letter of interest, resume, a <1,000-word statement of purpose (why do you want to work on this project, your research interests, and long-term career goals), unofficial copy of transcripts, GRE/TOEFL scores (if available), proof of valid drivers license, examples of published papers, and contact information for 3 references to Ms. Crystal Anderson at crhode2@clemson.edu

Cheetahs have been successfully bred in captivity for decades but releasing them successfully into the wild has been much more difficult.  As an intern for this project, you will be part of the only facility in the world that is successfully introducing cheetahs into the wild to increase the population. The scientists at this project have developed new and innovative methods to teach baby cheetahs to hunt, to avoid contact with potential threats, and have successfully released cheetahs into the wild and had them reproduce.  With a global population of approximately 7,500 cheetahs and only 600 in South Africa, this program is crucial to helping bolster the natural population.

This internship provides the opportunity to work with these magnificent animals while helping save the species from extinction.  You will be helping with daily care of cheetahs, assisting with medical care and procedures, training them to hunt, and reintroducing cheetahs to wild areas.

In addition, this facility houses other orphaned or injured African wildlife that will be released when healthy such as caracals, meerkats, and other African wildlife.

Learning outcomes you will gain during this internship:

  • Use proper techniques to approach and handle wildlife when appropriate.
  • Learn detailed animal husbandry techniques.
  • Describe the general principles of predator prey relationships and interspecific competition.
  • Understand dietary requirement of organisms and physiological demands during times of environmental stress.
  • Identify common organism and their taxonomy.
  • Maintain exact records of medicine, feeding amounts, and vitals.
  • Understand normal and abnormal behavior in cheetahs as it relates to health and potential to be released.
  • Communicate with local communities and scientists to understand the stakeholder viewpoints which are important to the management decisions.
  • Describe the goals and strategies that wildlife managers employ in Southern Africa to combat poaching.

Activities and skills you will be working on
  • Preparation and delivery of food to cheetah and other wildlife.
  • Participating in physical exams and medical procedures of rhino cheetahs.
  • Maintenance of the rehabilitation center.
  • Using innovate methods to train cheetahs to hunt.
  • Recording data on animal activity and behavior.
  • Identifying African birds and mammals.
  • Attending lectures about animal husbandry and rewilding techniques.
  • Interacting with local communities.
  • Tracking previously released cheetahs.

Please note that a monthly conservation and program fee is required, which covers food, transport, housing, conservation donation.

Field Study Abroad runs internship programs year round. Please get in touch.

How to Apply:
Please complete the Google Form here.

You will be working with biologists, park rangers, and other interns in a 25,000 hectare nature reserve in the lowveld area of South Africa. This area houses immense biodiversity and your internship will focus on the ecology and management of organisms on this reserve such as elephants, lions, hyenas and leopards. In addition, breeding initiatives on buffalo, Livingston eland and nyala are underway at this location.

The main research camp offers you a unique experience in the African bush and gives you the opportunity to be a part of the research and monitoring teams on the reserve, working as an assistant Field Ranger.

The focus of the project revolves around some of our key species; elephants, lions, hyenas and leopards. You will also be involved with monitoring our breeding of buffalo and their release into the open system. Habitat work also plays an important part of the monitoring process.

This Big 5 nature reserve is the home of nature conservation in South Africa and your work is vital for accurate management of the animals within the reserve. The data collected is also made available to students and researchers that we host, as well as a number of national conservation projects, including the Endangered Wildlife Trust (EWT).

Whether on a monitoring drive, on foot, or observing the wildlife at a waterhole, all of your work will be done under the guidance of our experienced field rangers. As each activity has a pre-determined objective, you don’t just get to view the animals, you get to live with them for a little while.

There’s nothing quite like sitting in the dark next to a lazing lion waiting for it to start its nightly call, or being surrounded by a herd of elephants and being able to spend time observing their individual traits and family dynamics.

At the end of the day, you return to the camp to share your experiences over dinner around the open fire and then fall asleep to the sounds of the bush. Join us for the experience of a lifetime!

Housing:
The Main Camp has:
  • Electricity and hot running water (solar panels: on overcast days it can sometimes run out).
  • Internet / WIFI
  • Reasonable cell reception at camp. You can easily buy a South-African SIM card (MTN is best) at the airport or in Hoedspruit.
  • Comfortable lounge area: library with books and magazines, TV, DVD players.
  • Swimming Pool
