Population modeling to support recovery efforts for the threatened June Sucker in Utah Lake

The Quantitative Fisheries and Aquatic Ecology Lab at Utah State University is recruiting a talented MS student to begin in Fall semester 2025. Our research focuses broadly on how aquatic ecosystems and fish populations respond to environmental changes and management efforts. The successful candidate will lead population modeling efforts to support recovery of the threatened June sucker (Chasmistes liorus), and to inform invasive common carp (Cyprinus carpio) control in Utah Lake, a large shallow lake in central Utah. A key benchmark of June sucker recovery is the establishment of a self-sustaining wild population, yet detecting wild recruitment may be challenged by the large number of hatchery fish stocked each year. The student will examine the probability of detecting natural recruitment across a range of stocking scenarios, natural recruitment rates, and sampling intensities. Additionally, the common carp population in Utah Lake has been subject to ongoing mechanical removal efforts since 2009. The student will examine the economic conditions necessary to effectively incentivize commercial harvests of common carp, particularly as biomass is reduced during removals. The results of each of these population modelling efforts will directly inform management decisions in Utah Lake, and inform similar native fish recovery and invasive species control efforts globally.

Qualifications: B.S. in biology, ecology, mathematics or a related field and a minimum 3.2 GPA. A good work ethic and strong mathematical, writing, organizational and data management skills are required, as well as the ability to maintain positive working relationships with members of the lab, department, and stakeholder groups. A willingness to work in the field, often in boats, in challenging conditions (heat, cold, wind, rain, snow) is required.

Location: The successful applicant will be based out of the Department of Watershed Sciences at Utah State University in Logan, UT. Logan is a small college town located at the base of the Bear River Range and the Cache National Forest, offering a diversity of outdoor recreation opportunities, as well as being within a short drive of Salt Lake City and its many amenities.

Stipend: $2,250 per month stipend, plus tuition, fees and subsidized health insurance (total award ~$36,000/year).

Closing date: Until filled. Potential applicants should submit materials as soon as possible to be considered.

Starting date: July 15, 2025 (mid-August at the latest)

Position Available: 1

Housing: Included

Terms of Service:

Start Date: 06/02/25

End Date: 08/15/25

AmeriCorps Slot Classification: 300 hr

Number of Weeks: 11

Purpose:

Southeast Conservation Corps (SECC) is a non-profit, AmeriCorps-affiliated organization. This individual placement is in partnership with the National Park Service and is an AmeriCorps Position.

SECC empowers young adults to cultivate compassion, responsibility, and grit through community service, and environmental stewardship.

SECC selects young adults, ages 18-30, to complete conservation projects on public lands throughout the Southeast. SECC programs encourage environmental stewardship, foster community partnerships, and emphasize experiential learning. SECC serves a diverse population that is representative of the Southeast, including youth, graduates, veterans, and a cross-section of ethnicities and income levels.

The Medgar and Myrlie Evers Home National Monument in Jackson, Mississippi, is a unit of the National Park Service honoring the life, work, and legacies of two important civil rights leaders: Medgar and Myrlie Evers.

The National Park Service (NPS) preserves unimpaired the natural and cultural resources and values of the national park system for the enjoyment, education, and inspiration of this and future generations. The National Park Service cooperates with partners to extend the benefits of natural and cultural resource conservation and outdoor recreation throughout this country and the world.

This internship is within the park’s History Division, which is responsible for historical research and programming about the Evers family, the rehabilitation and preservation of the Evers Home, and cultural resource management (including collections management) at park sites.

Position Overview:

The Medgar and Myrlie Evers Home National Monument became a unit of the National Park Service in November 2020 via Section 2301 of the John D. Dingell, Jr. Conservation, Management, and Recreation Act of 2019. Park staff have spent the past few years developing interpretation, creating foundational documents, and building capacity for programs and partnerships. The park currently has a small collection comprised of artifacts uncovered during a 2023 archaeological survey—these items are stored at the Southeast Archeological Center (SEAC) in Tallahassee, Florida.

Recently, the Evers family has expressed interest in donating a significant number of artifacts to the park, which will likely include archival materials, clothing, furnishings, and a variety of objects. The Collections Intern's primary focus will be conducting research and engaging in collections management work to support the acquisition of this new collection. Based on the intern’s interest and experience, they will also have the opportunity to help interpret MEMY’s existing collections and develop interpretive materials (including exhibits, digital media, and in-person tours) to share the park’s cultural resources with the public.

Description of Duties:

Help manage and document the MEMY collection, including archaeological materials housed at SEAC

·       Gain a comprehensive understanding of MEMY’s existing collections by becoming familiar with park foundational documents and procedures.

·       Photograph and document the collection as needed.

·       Conduct research about the objects in the collection where relevant.

·       Manage and update collections records in the Museum Collections Management System (MCMS).

Work alongside the Historian, Curator, and regional staff members to manage the acquisition and processing of the new Evers family collection.

·       Assist with collections care, storage, documentation, and transportation

·       Travel to the location where the collection is currently stored to assist with processing and transporting the collection to its new storage location (schedule-dependent)

·       Conduct research about objects in the collection where relevant

·       Engage with the Evers family to learn more about collection items (through formal oral histories or informal conversations, schedule-dependent)

Salary:
$75,000 to $100,000 per year
Education Required:
Bachelors
Experience Required:
at least 10 years
Location:
Ozark Region (Missouri)
Description
The nationally accredited Ozark Land Trust (OLT) is seeking an Executive Director to lead the organization into the future. This is a full-time, salaried position based at a flexible location in the Ozark region.  Compensation is $75,000 - $100,000, commensurate with qualifications, expertise and experience.

A passion for and experience in natural resource conservation, land protection and small nonprofit organization management are all substantial considerations.  Candidates need a minimum of 10 years of progressively responsible positions, demonstrating professional growth and development in their field.  An exhibited ability to work with a wide range of individuals, agencies, nonprofits and landowners is a plus. A college degree is required, and an advanced degree will be considered. Past OLT leaders have had a variety of backgrounds, including natural resources, land trusts, conservation, government agencies, law, fundraising and nonprofit governance.  The organization desires a leader with strong ties to the Ozark region and who has a long-term commitment to the mission and geographic focus of OLT.

OLT protects over 32,000 acres across the Missouri and Arkansas portions of the Ozark bioregion. These include, but are not limited to, watersheds, forests, caves, farming and grazing lands, prairies and scenic viewsheds. About 80 percent of these lands are protected by conservation easements with private landowners, with the remainder owned by OLT.  Additionally, OLT performs conservation practices in conjunction with a variety of agency and nonprofit partners.

Ozark Land Trust is the operating trade name of Ozark Regional Land Trust, a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt nonprofit organization incorporated in the State of Missouri and doing business in Arkansas.  OLT is overseen by a Board of Directors with members across the Ozark region.  The Board meets quarterly and has an annual meeting of the membership. The Board has a Land Conservation Committee to review projects and land-related issues, Executive Committee, Finance Committee, Governance Committee and Fundraising/Outreach Committee. The Board, in collaboration with the Executive Director, is responsible for strategic planning for the organization.

The Executive Director supervises the professional staff.  The position has ultimate responsibility for the day-to-day operation of the organization, including program and project oversight, land stewardship, budget and expense management, fundraising, newsletter production and social outreach.

OLT has seven full- and part-time associates for project management, stewardship, outreach and partnership, and administration. Staff are located throughout the Ozark region; therefore, weekly staff meetings are usually held via Zoom. OLT also engages contractors for accounting, audit, marketing, donor database, GIS and other areas as needed from time to time.  The current retiring Executive Director is available to continue in a part-time capacity to offer continuity and training, and to focus on areas of operation that might best serve the new leader.

OLT offers medical insurance, a Simple IRA plan option and paid leave. This is a home-based position, so the director will work from a home office in the Ozark region.

OLT is funded by a variety of sources, including an annual campaign, landowner donations from new projects, grants from private/family foundations and agencies, and income from its stewardship and operating endowments. OLT’s financial condition is audited annually, and it employs an accounting firm for its normal financial operations, preparation of quarterly financial statements and to aid in planning and budgeting. The organization’s endowments are maintained with the Community Foundation of the Ozarks.

OLT has an extensive outreach presence within the region. Events are conducted around the Ozarks 2-3 times a year. Board members and staff attend a variety of agency and professional meetings to build relationships and support for land protection efforts. A print newsletter, website presence and social media platforms assist in  promoting our work and that of fellow land trusts through the Missouri Land Trust Coalition and the national Land Trust Alliance.

It is the policy of the Ozark Land Trust to provide equal employment opportunities without regard to race, color, ethnicity, sex, age, disability, religion, national origin, sexual or affectional preference, or marital/civil union status.
