Description
Under the general supervision of a Wildlife Biologist III, this position leads field efforts and provides technical assistance for research projects on large carnivore ecology, population dynamics, and habitat selection with an emphasis on brown bears and American black bears in Southeast, Alaska. The incumbent will assist with research needs to answer questions that are important to sustainably managing wildlife populations.

We are looking for applicants that have prior large carnivore research experience and demonstrate the ability to clearly communicate, think quickly and act calmly in stressful situations. This position requires frequent travel to remote settings within Alaska under physically demanding conditions and inclement weather. Applicants must be physically able and willing to walk long distances in frequently wet environments, steep and rugged terrain, and fly in small aircraft at low altitudes while collecting various types of data. Typical of most research opportunities, the majority of days are spent at a computer managing large datasets, processing biological samples, conducting analyses, and report writing. Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and management/analysis of complex datasets using advanced computer software environments is desired.

Naturalist Interns staff nature centers and lead environmental education and interpretive programs in the Vail, Colorado area. This is a full-time, seasonal professional growth position where Naturalists develop skills and knowledge in Rocky Mountain ecology, environmental education, interpretation, public speaking, and conservation efforts throughout their tenure. Naturalist Interns will receive NAI’s Certified Interpretive Guiding course and other professional development opportunities as part of this position.
 
Naturalist Interns operate and maintain a variety of nature centers:
·        Walking Mountains Science Center in Avon
·        Vail Nature Center in Vail’s Ford Park
·        Nature Discovery Center atop Vail Mountain
 
Additionally, Naturalists plan and present public programs at these and several other partner locations, through programs such as:

The Alaska Department of Fish and Game, Division of Wildlife Conservation is recruiting for a Wildlife Biologist 2/3 Flex located in Soldotna!

What you will be doing:
This position is a flexibly staffed Wildlife Biologist 2/3 stationed with the Kenai Moose Research Center (MRC) near Soldotna.  The incumbent will design and conduct research on both the captive animal herd at the MRC and wild populations on the Kenai Peninsula and/or statewide and will assist with animal husbandry and associated tasks at the MRC. The scale and scope of research responsibility assigned to the incumbent will depend on their qualifications, experience, and expertise.

The working conditions you can expect:
The incumbent will be based in and have an office in the city of Soldotna.  Research will be conducted at the Kenai Moose Research Center, located 45 road miles northeast of the city on Kenai National Wildlife Refuge lands.  Research is conducted in remote surroundings, outdoors year-round, within large enclosures where moose exhibit species-typical behaviors and forage on natural vegetation.  Additional research tasks may investigate wild populations of moose on the Kenai Peninsula and across Southcentral Alaska.

Who we are looking for:
We are looking for an individual with the following knowledge, skills, and abilities:
  • Experience working with and/or in close proximity to large mammals (> 100 kg) in a captive facility or free-range setting.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of wildlife biology, physiology and ecology, and a knowledge base that includes terrestrial wildlife species common to Alaska and their biology and life histories.
  • Experience designing, planning, budgeting for, and conducting wildlife research projects and/or programs in remote areas with inconsistent logistical support.  
  • Experience collecting, analyzing, and communicating data from large mammal populations.  Skills should also include a solid understanding of field data collection methods, wildlife-based statistical techniques, and experience with scientific writing and the peer review publication process. The ideal incumbent may have specialized experience in some or all of the following: Collecting spatial data, measuring animal health and body condition, population modeling, or developing sustainable harvest goals.
  • Working as part of a team for long periods of time in remote locations, ability to adapt standard data collection techniques to field use, and the ability to maintain or repair field equipment or facilities necessary to support research.

Minimum Qualifications

Wildlife Biologist 2

A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college in biology, a branch of biology, limnology, biometrics, oceanography, forestry, or natural resource management.
AND
One year of professional level biologist experience. The required professional biologist experience is met by service as a Wildlife Biologist 1, Fishery Biologist 1, or Habitat Biologist 1 with the State of Alaska or the equivalent with another employer.

Substitutions:
A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college that includes or is supplemented by the following credit hours will substitute for the degree in a specific field:
• at least 24 semester hours (36 quarter hours) in biology, a branch of biology, limnology, biometrics, oceanography, forestry, or natural resource management (excluding courses that focus on agricultural husbandry techniques, human population dynamics, or the design and manipulation of landscapes), of which 16 semester hours (24 quarter hours) are upper division courses; and
• at least 12 semester hours (16 quarter hours) in any combination of two or more of the following: chemistry, physics, mathematics, statistics, geology, hydrology, or GIS.

A master's degree from an accredited college in biology, a branch of biology, limnology, biometrics, oceanography, forestry or natural resource management, will substitute for the required year of professional level biologist experience.

“Upper division courses” means courses that are specialized, in-depth and advanced. Senior Education Internship

(9-month position, March/April-November)


This Senior Education Internship is a fully immersive experience that provides broad range of competency and skill development in the field of raptor conservation and environmental education. The 9-month position begins in March and continues through November, and reports to the Director of Education. This longer-term, residential experience offers unique and unparalleled learning and skill acquisition opportunities in every season, and training at Hawk Mountain Sanctuary sets participants apart as leaders in the field. Senior Education Interns also have a wide range of opportunities to participate in including on-site field courses, professional development and networking opportunities, weekly college-level seminars in spring and autumn, and fun outings and adventures. Interns receive free on-site housing and a monthly stipend.

QUALIFICATIONS
The ideal candidate will hold a degree in environmental science, education, biology, or related field; possess teaching skills; and have experience working with live ambassador animals, preferably raptors. The position requires an understanding of Hawk Mountain’s raptor conservation science and education activities, as well as enthusiasm for connecting diverse audiences of all ages with Hawk Mountain’s mission. Excellent communication skills and a passion for nature and environmental education is a must. All candidates must have the ability to hike at least two miles over steep, rocky terrain, to lift 50 pounds, and have a valid driver’s license.

PRIMARY DUTIES
• Assist and ensure smooth operations of ongoing programming responsibilities both on and off site, including but not limited to group programs, weekend programs, virtual programs, Calendar of Events walks and talks, birthday parties, scout events, and guided hikes.
• Teach summer nature camp programs.
• Assist with preparing curricula and lesson plans as assigned.
• Teach and mentor trainees, volunteers, and counselors in training.
• Distribute educational materials and/or lesson plans that help to spread ongoing research and raptor conservation mission and the Sanctuary’s science-education programs.
• Setup, break down, and clean classrooms and other teaching spaces and organize teaching materials physically and virtually.
• Perform husbandry responsibilities for resident raptors and other animal ambassadors.
• Adhere to all standard operating procedures.
• Engage diverse audiences of all ages in Hawk Mountain’s mission.
• Demonstrate excellent customer service skills with Sanctuary visitors, supporters, program participants, and customers.
• Exhibit excellent communications with the professional education team, all Sanctuary departments, and guests.
• Assist with any other tasks and/or projects as assigned.

The  US Army Corps of Engineers Garrison Project Office on Lake Sakakawea in Riverdale, North Dakota is looking to hire one seasonal Archeological Technician. 

As an archeological technician working for the US Army Corps of Engineers you will be working on and around Lake Sakakawea in North Dakota. Individuals will assist cultural resources staff with monitoring cultural sites, performing class III surveys, and site testing and evaluations. Duties will include operating handheld GPS units, collection of field data and notes, post-field data management, small scale excavation work (test units and STPs), operating 4x4 vehicles and/or boats, utilizing ARCGIS Pro for mapping and data management, field surveys, and site documentation. 

 All job duties and responsibilities will be trained for on the job.

Clemson University seeks applications for a tenure-track position in Waterfowl Ecology and Management at the Assistant Professor level. The incumbent will also serve as the inaugural Assistant Director of the James C. Kennedy Waterfowl and Wetlands Conservation Center. This will be a 9-month, 100% Research position in residence at the Baruch Institute of Coastal Ecology and Forest Science (BICEFS) in Georgetown, SC. We seek candidates who will contribute to a collegial, interdisciplinary community with a strong tradition of both fundamental and applied research and our commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion. The successful candidate will create and maintain a robust and innovative research agenda focused on the management and ecology of waterfowl. We seek a candidate with demonstrated expertise in movement ecology, habitat use and selection, disease ecology, genetics, or demography of ducks and geese. Research should be targeted towards providing clear, tangible benefits to management, conservation, and policy. A central part of the successful candidate’s portfolio will focus on issues that impact waterfowl populations in South Carolina and the southeastern US.

Qualifications
The successful candidate will be expected to initiate, build, and sustain an externally funded, internationally recognized waterfowl research program, publish in high-quality peer-reviewed journals, mentor graduate and undergraduate students, and contribute to the productivity and administration of the Kennedy Center. The incumbent’s home department and tenure-initiating unit will be the Department of Forestry and Environmental Conservation. Candidates must have a doctoral degree, or equivalent, in Wildlife Biology, Environmental Sciences, Natural Resource Management, Ecology, or related fields and research expertise in waterfowl ecology. Ideal candidates will have postdoctoral experience and a Ph.D. dissertation related to waterfowl ecology and demonstrated interest in outreach to integrate their research with stakeholder needs.

Entomological Field Technician (contractual)

Contractual field technicians (2) needed to survey the fireflies of interdunal wetland systems at Assateague Island National Seashore, Maryland. The field technicians will be focusing on a highly threatened firefly species known to be present at the Seashore. Technicians will be expected to survey wetlands approximately 20 evenings between late June and early August 2025, weather permitting, from sunset to ~12am. Overnight accommodation at the Seashore will be provided and will be a combination of a remote cabin and/or an RV pad if the technician prefers (camping with use of the technician’s personal equipment is also possible).  A personal vehicle with four-wheel drive, capable of driving in sand (i.e. across beaches), is required to access survey sites. Mileage reimbursement beyond the contractual pay, for use of the personal vehicle on-site, is possible. Technicians are expected to work both as a team and independently after dark in remote settings, which may lack cell phone service, and must be willing to share personal vehicles with co-workers, if necessary. Prior entomological field collecting skills are required. Preference given to those with experience identifying and collecting specimens in natural field settings and working with insect voucher collections. Technicians must be willing to work on weekend evenings if necessary and must be able to tolerate biting insects and inclement weather (e.g., light rain, wind, heat, humidity). This is a contractual opportunity without benefits.

Qualifications

·       Minimum of a BS in entomology or a related field. Relevant graduate degree or equivalent experience, preferred. Exceptional candidates without a college degree in a relevant field will be considered.
·       Experience collecting insects in a field setting with the use of a sweep net.
·       Experience working successfully in remote settings without supervision, preferred. 
·       Experience working in collections with insect voucher specimens, preferred. 
·       Ability to be flexible dependent on weather conditions (e.g., work weekend evenings if necessary)
·       Ability to work as a team and independently at night in remote settings including wetlands.
·       Experience driving a four-wheel drive vehicle in rough terrain including sand.  Candidates must possess a personal vehicle with four-wheel drive. 
·       Self-motivated with a proven strong desire to collect scientifically relevant field data.
·       Technicians are responsible for their own relevant health insurance while undertaking field surveys

Salary

Graduate Research Assistant in Bat Ecology 

Richard Stevens in the Department of Natural Resources Management at Texas Tech University is looking to fill a research assistantship in bat ecology and conservation.  Applications from either M.S. Boise National Forest North Zone Silviculture is recruiting two, 480 Hour AmeriCorps members beginning in June 2025. Work would include assisting our US Forest Service Silviculture Foresters and Technicians with timber stand improvement, timber sale, and reforestation related activities. 
 
Duties and Responsibilities: 
Duties may include collecting data via forest stand surveys, various project unit recon and layout, contract inspection for planting/non-commercial thinning/stand exam, and assisting with cone collection efforts. 
Specific activities include: 
·       Non-commercial thinning/Planting unit recon and layout (33%) 
·       Inspection of contractor work on Non-commercial thinning/Planting/Stand Exam project (33%) 
·       Collection of forest measurement data in preparation of timber sale prescriptions (33%)

Program Benefits
$7,680 living allowance dispersed on a monthly basis and upon successful completion of program requirements, education award amount of $1,956.35. The position will also include a $194.12 gear reimbursement fund. Housing may be provided. 
 
The living allowance and education award are taxable. Members are responsible for providing their own food. Service eligibility is contingent upon the results of a criminal and driving background check.
