Description

Title: Synthesis of critical knowledge gaps in climate change risks to wetlands and wetland ecosystems services in the Midwest.

A postdoctoral research associate position is available in the Department of Fisheries and Wildlife at Michigan State University (MSU) as part of the Midwest Climate Adaptation Science Center (MW CASC), a Center funded by the U.S. Geological Survey and comprising academic and partner institutions in Illinois, Minnesota, Michigan, Wisconsin, and Indiana (https://mwcasc.umn.edu/). The MW CASC is part of a national network of regional Centers that teams scientists with natural and cultural resource managers and local communities to help fish, wildlife, water, land, and people adapt to a changing climate. The MW CASC Consortium’s vision is to advance climate adaptation science and practice across all components of the climate adaptation cycle by pursuing region-specific, collaborative, synthesis projects that build on past work, provide new resources and tools, and catalyze adaptation capacity across the Midwest.

The MSU-based Postdoctoral Fellow will serve as the principal analyst and researcher for the Consortium’s synthesis project intended to identify key gaps in the translation of climate science, and use of climate change adaptation approaches, among practitioners actively restoring drained wetlands in the Midwestern United States. The approach will emphasize relationship-building and engagement with a diverse group of practitioners who will be invited to collaborate and assist with the synthesis.  Post-doctoral associate will assess the state of the science and practices used to inform projects where lands are being transitioned back from agricultural use. Initial goals are to learn about the restoration practices, including what guidance and tools practitioners are using for site selection and for implementing and evaluating restoration projects, particularly considering a changing climate.  The postdoc will be expected to lead data analysis, organize workshops, and develop senior-authored manuscripts as outputs from these activities. Research outcomes will be co-produced with non-academic partners to support the implementation of research findings in environmental decision-making and will require partner engagement and regular briefings.

The postdoc will work closely with MSU faculty, Drs. Jen Owen, Angela Burrow, and Barret Wessel, and TNC research scientist Dr. Kimberly Hall and with a regional synthesis working group that will include consortium members and state, federal, and tribal partners. The postdoc will be expected to interact in-person with the synthesis project’s working group at annual MW CASC meetings, workshops, and other appropriate events.

Opportunities for training, professional development, and conference attendance will be provided by the team as well as through the MSU Office of Postdoctoral Affairs (https://postdocs.msu.edu/).

Paws Animal Wildlife Sanctuary, Inc. (PAWS) is a volunteer based non-profit organization focusing on wildlife education, rescue and rehabilitation. Due to our many state and federal permits, we have the widest range of wildlife species including raptors, waterfowl, a few songbirds, the usual mammal species (squirrels, rabbits, opossums, skunks, etc.) plus beavers, armadillos, and more, and also including domestic rabbits that have been rescued from crisis situations.

While we do not have a formal intern program, we often have volunteer interns from various colleges in the upstate area of SC that go on to become veterinarians and wildlife biologists.  Some of the schools give college credit for the time spent with us.  Some of our interns continue their volunteering with us even after their semester is over.  We love that!  (You do not need to actively be in college to volunteer with us.)

PAWS is looking for volunteers who can come to our facility in Laurens for approximately 4- 6 hours on your scheduled days.  You must be at least 18 years of age and have your own transportation. You will train with other volunteers and must be willing to commit to once a week.

Description
AUBURN UNIVERSITY
School of Fisheries, Aquaculture, and Aquatic Sciences
Postdoctoral Researcher - Ecology of Harmful Algal Blooms

The School of Fisheries, Aquaculture, and Aquatic Sciences at Auburn University is seeking candidates for a Postdoctoral Researcher to work both independently and collaboratively with members of our research team to develop research projects that further our understanding of the ecology of freshwater harmful algal blooms. The incumbent will join an active lab (https://wilsonlab.com/) whose recent research activities integrate large-scale, whole pond and mesocosm experiments, lake surveys, remote sensing, statistical modelling, and meta-analysis to understand the importance of abiotic and biotic factors that affect the promotion or control of algal blooms in aquaculture ponds and drinking water and recreational reservoirs. The incumbent will have ample opportunities to participate in existing USDAS supported lab projects, develop new research directions, and support the writing of research proposals and manuscripts. This is a benefit eligible, non-tenure track position. The appointment is for an initial period of one year with a possibility of continuance up to a maximum of four years depending on performance and funding availability.  In addition to professional development opportunities available in our lab, Auburn University offers many resources for our postdoc community - http://graduate.auburn.edu/postdoc/

I am motivated to maintain a productive, diverse, and inclusive lab and encourage individuals from under-represented groups to consider joining us.  Moreover, lab members are strongly encouraged to develop outreach activities to broaden the impact of their research.

Available infrastructure: Our lab is fully equipped for field and lab-based research. The incumbent will have access to trucks, boats, sampling gear, microscopes, and analytical chemistry and molecular tools. In addition, the School of Fisheries manages a spectacular field station with more than 300 ponds that vary in size, shape, depth, and productivity that the incumbent will be encouraged to use as part of their research efforts.  We also collaborate with diverse stakeholders throughout the US, such as aquaculture farmers, water utilities, non-profits, natural resource managers, and academics, that could be leveraged as part of this position.

Qualifications: The minimum qualification is an earned Ph.D. in Biology, Aquaculture, Microbiology, Ecology, Limnology, Analytical Chemistry, Molecular Ecology, or closely related field at the time employment begins. The Postdoctoral Researcher is expected to conduct research related to the ecology of harmful algal blooms. Selected candidates must have knowledge/experience with harmful algal blooms, experience with analyzing experimental and monitoring data sets, and significant experience with manuscript preparation and publication. Although we welcome all candidates with prior experience related to harmful algal blooms, research areas that we are particular interested in growing in the lab include biogeochemistry, ecotoxicology, and molecular approaches to study interactions between cyanobacteria and associated organisms. Given that we serve diverse stakeholders, strong communication skills are also required. The individual selected for the position must be able to meet eligibility requirements for work in the United States by the start date and continue working legally for the proposed term of employment.

How to apply: Applicants must complete an on-line application process at the following link: https://www.auemployment.com/postings/45964 and attach the following: 1) cover letter stating research interests and career goals, 2) current curriculum vita, and 3) copies of all academic transcripts. When prompted, please provide names, phone numbers, and email addresses of three professional references. Only complete application materials will be considered. Active review of applications will continue until the position is filled. Salary (~$55,000/yr) will be commensurate with education and experience.

For questions regarding the position, please contact Dr. Alan Wilson at wilson@auburn.edu or visit https://wilsonlab.com/ to learn more about our lab.
