About Westervelt Ecological Services
Westervelt Ecological Services (WES) specializes in the restoration and conservation of wetlands, streams, and habitats for listed species through the development of conservation and mitigation banks. These banks provide environmental mitigation and habitat services to landowners, businesses, government agencies, and land trusts throughout Alabama, Florida, and Mississippi. Position Overview
The Summer Land Management Intern will support the Westervelt Ecological Services Land Stewardship Teams in Auburn, AL, Charleston, SC and Franklin, TN. This hands-on internship offers a unique opportunity to gain experience in ecological restoration, habitat monitoring, and land management across a variety of conservation and mitigation sites.

Interns will assist with fieldwork including vegetation and hydrological monitoring, invasive species treatment, GPS/GIS mapping, data analysis, and the development of technical reports. A housing allowance will be provided.

Key Responsibilities
Conduct habitat and vegetation monitoring
Assist with hydrological assessments
Support invasive species control activities
Utilize GPS and GIS tools for mapping and data collection
Analyze field data and contribute to technical documentation
Collaborate with team members, contractors, and landowners
Travel to various conservation sites, including overnight stays

Requirements
Basic knowledge of Southeastern flora and fauna; tree identification skills highly desirable
Strong communication and interpersonal skills
Ability to work independently and in team settings
Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and Word; strong data management and organizational skills
Valid driver’s license and ability to safely operate 4WD vehicles and UTVs
Basic map and compass navigation skills; experience with GPS and GIS applications preferred
Physically fit and able to work in challenging terrain and weather conditions
Highly motivated, critical thinker, and adaptable to dynamic work schedules
Actively pursuing a degree in forestry, wildlife biology, biology, botany, environmental studies, ecology, or a related field

Position Overview
We are seeking passionate and experienced Stream Restoration Interns to join our Auburn, Alabama office for the Summer of 2026. This internship offers a hands-on opportunity to assist in identifying new restoration sites and contribute to technical reporting and data analysis. Interns will gain valuable field experience in stream geomorphology, ecological assessment, and restoration planning.

A housing allowance will be provided for students who are required to relocate for the position.

Key Responsibilities
Assist in reconnaissance efforts to identify potential stream restoration sites
Collect and process stream geomorphic data using RiverMorph
Support development of monitoring reports and technical documentation
Perform baseline assessments of stream conditions, including habitat evaluations and geomorphological measurements

Requirements

Surveying experience (differential leveling) preferred but not required
Strong communication and interpersonal skills

Description
Position Overview: Serve as a lead researcher for the FWRI Coral Research Program and provide scientific support to the long-term monitoring programs and coral research projects conducted by the FWRI. Visit the program’s website at https://myfwc.com/research/habitat/coral/ for more information.
 
Responsibilities and duties will include:
Serve as the co-PI of the Coral Reef Evaluation & Monitoring Project (CREMP) in the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary (FKNMS) and Dry Tortugas.  Directly assist the CREMP PI to ensure completion of all administrative, field, and data assimilation tasks. Assist with the deployment of CREMP protocols and standards to ensure collection and entry of project data is completed in a satisfactory manner by all team members. Facilitate updates and revisions to QA/QC protocols as specified. Provide technical assistance and instructional guidance for the identification and taxonomy of coral reef organisms and assist with or lead training exercises to carry out field surveys. Assist with the organization and dissemination of CREMP project data to make datasets publicly accessible and to fulfill reporting deliverables to agencies. Complete statistical analyses of project data and creation of summary tables and graphics used for annual reports, manuscripts, and presentations. Write and co-author proposals, progress and comprehensive reports, and publications of peer-reviewed manuscripts.  Prepare and make oral presentations at scientific meetings, stakeholder workshops, and professional conferences. Continue or create new cooperative working relationships within the Institute, with other divisions of FWC and with external organizations, agencies, and partners to expand the research objectives of CREMP and/other coral research projects.  When necessary, serve as a coral subject matter expert on review panels and provide technical guidance to other governmental, academic, and private groups for emerging coral reef issues and policies.
 
Conduct in situ demographic surveys of scleractinians, octocorals, and sponges for CREMP and other FWC long-term coral monitoring programs.  Participate in data collection that follow demographic protocols or use underwater photography/videography. Participate in and assist with training exercises to carry out field surveys. Identify coral, octocoral, sponge and other selected taxa in site or from photographic images of underwater transects using point count software. Assist in mobilizing and demobilizing for all field operations. Supervise FTE and/or OPS coral support staff that are responsible for assisting with CREMP data organization and management and data collected for other coral research projects.  Duties include but are not limited to: recruitment, training, planning and directing work, mentoring and reviewing performance with employee, approving timesheets, and ensuring compliance with Commission and FWRI rules, policies, and procedures. 
 
Serve as the FWRI Project Manager for the Southeast Florida Coral Reef Evaluation and Monitoring Project (SECREMP). Responsible for project administration to ensure all grant deliverables and activities are completed in a timely manner.  Manage subcontracts associated with SECREMP external partners (NOVA SE University/NCRI) so all field activities are completed in accordance with FWRI policies and procedures.  Assist in the statistical analysis and interpretation of SECREMP data, contribute as a coauthor on SECREMP reports and peer reviewed manuscripts, and ensure quarterly and annual reports are completed in a satisfactory manner.

Description
This position serves as the Assistant Chief for the Communications, Education and Outreach Section. CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

  8. This position is a member of the prescribed fire management team and therefore requires an annual physical fitness test. The test requires walking two miles in thirty minutes while wearing a pack containing twenty-five pounds. Initial completion of this test is required within the first six months of start date.

Description of Role:

This position works for the Camp Blanding Environmental Division and serves as a biological and natural resource management specialist to support the installation’s military and ecosystem stewardship missions. The person in this role will conduct field work in all seasons and provide administrative support regarding their program and projects throughout the year.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
The individual in this position is termed the “CCAA Biologist” and has three primary responsibilities: to oversee and execute Camp Blanding’s Candidate Conservation Agreement with Assurances (the CCAA), to act as subject matter expert regarding State of Florida listed imperiled species, and to actively participate in the wildland fire management program.

  • CCAA oversight and execution includes:
    • Annual upland vegetation sampling in flatwoods, sandhill, and scrub communities
    • Gopher tortoise surveying
    • Water quality monitoring
    • Aquatic invertebrate sampling (1 week)
    • Invasive plant management (annual contract execution and as-needed herbicide application)
    • Annual report authorship
    • Updating and maintaining complete data records
    • GIS data stewardship
  • State of Florida Imperiled species subject matter expertise:
    • Maintaining up-to-date education regarding State of Florida imperiled species requirements
    • Making state listed species permit determinations and securing relevant permits
    • Ensuring compliance with state permits through field work such as species surveys, camera trapping, burrow excavation, nest box monitoring, call counts, animal handling, etc.
    • Completing National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) requirements relating to state listed species
    • Updating and maintaining complete data records

  • Wildland fire program participation consists of assignment on approximately fifty prescribed fires annually, to include:

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Responsible for full implementation the Forest Management Plan (FMP), to include reviewing and updating the plan every five years. Through GIS mapping, ensure all required maps of Camp Blanding forestry are up to date and accurate on a yearly basis. Coordinate or conduct post wide timber assessments on a five-year basis as needed to plan future operations.
 
  • Full oversight of timber sale contracts, site preparation for reforestation, timber inventory, timber marking, and tree planting contracts. Develop and write scope of work for contract regarding logging and tree planting. Ensure contractors are selected and operating based on the full requirements of the contract. Implementation of reforestation will also include the management of threatened and endangered species in coordination with the conservation section and management. Search and apply for grants to gain funding that will assist with CBJTC reforestation requirements.
 
  • Continued implementation of different revenue streams such as Palmetto Barry sales, Apiary Lease agreements (Bees), Pine Straw sales, and Fuel Wood Chipping sales. Search, pursue and implement innovative ways to generate new revenue streams to reduce the agencies dependency of timber sales. Write scopes of work for contracts for all revenue streams. Work closely with the Purchasing Department to ensure contract are placed for bid. Assist with awarding and implementing contracts and all requirements are fully implemented.
 
  • Other environmental/forestry responsibilities: In coordination with Environmental personnel, plan and implement habitat improvement projects that include an element of economic utilization, manage timber inventory sampling, manage reforestation efforts and habitat conversion, and ensure yearly projects are recorded and reported accurately within the Candidate Conservation Agreement with Assurances Annual Report.
 
  • Provides fire management assistance under the supervision of the Forest Area Supervisor to include prescribed burning of training areas, identification of fire hazards and conditions, and prescribes proper remedial steps to prevent or mitigate fire.
 
  • Helps when needed in the operation of light to heavy equipment in the regular maintenance of airfields, drop zones, landing zones, roads, ditches and culverts, and other various maintenance and repair projects to support the training site. This can include operation of loaders, dump trucks, heavy bulldozers, earthmovers, road graders, and backhoes.
 
  • Applies herbicides to areas of pine release and invasive control.
 
  • Conducts minor maintenance on Forestry equipment.
 
  • Perform all other duties as assigned.

Supervisory Responsibility: Students, interns, and volunteers may be the supervisory responsibility of this position.

Reporting Structure: Reports to the Postdoctoral Researcher.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work: This appointment is for one year. This is a full-time position that works up to 40 hrs per week and may require weekend and holiday work. A mixture of fieldwork, lab work, and administration is to be expected. When conducting field work, this position is required to work in various weather conditions, which could include rain, humidity, and heat or cold. There may also be night work when working with nocturnal animals. 

Work Environment: While performing the duties of the job, the employee will primarily operate in a mixed work environment that includes both laboratory and zoo grounds. Time will be split between indoor laboratory settings and outdoor or behind-the-scenes animal care areas.

Physical Demands:
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

This position requires frequent sitting, standing, walking. May require bending, kneeling, or navigating uneven terrain during animal observations or habitat evaluations. Occasional lifting or movement of items up to 50 pounds is required.
