- Minimum 21 yrs and paid work experience
- Fluent in English; basic conversational French preferred
- Good health and physical stamina; able to lift up to 35 lbs

Description
*Applications will be reviewed on a rolling-basis.

USDA Forest Service Office/Lab and Location: A fellowship opportunity is available with the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) Forest Service (FS) within the Forest Service Washington Office. Opportunity is remote.

At the heart of the USDA Forest Service's mission is their purpose. Everything they do is intended to help sustain forests and grasslands for present and future generations. Why? Because their stewardship work supports nature in sustaining life. This is the purpose that drives the agency’s mission and motivates their work across the agency. It’s been there from the agency’s very beginning, and it still drives them. To advance the mission and serve their purpose, the USDA Forest Service balances the short and long-term needs of people and nature by: working in collaboration with communities and our partners; providing access to resources and experiences that promote economic, ecological, and social vitality; connecting people to the land and one another; and delivering world-class science, technology and land management.

Research Project: This project involves managing and analyzing long term Arctic vegetation data compiled through the National Science Foundation supported US ITEX-Arctic Observing Network/International Tundra Experiment (AON). The participant will become familiar with these data and support the development of peer reviewed research based on analyses. The data reflect changes in species composition and structure from experimentally manipulated plots with warming and snow depth treatments conducted over three decades at the Toolik Lake Long Term Ecological Research Site in northern Alaska.

The US ITEX-Arctic Observatory Network (AON) has tracked terrestrial ecosystem change along a latitudinal gradient in Alaska and Greenland since 2007 as part of the interagency program Study of Environmental Arctic Change (SEARCH). The goal of the AON project is to document and understand arctic terrestrial ecosystem change by maintaining the continuity of the temporally critical datasets of the ITEX AON and to use the datasets in synthesis and modeling efforts to provide the global research community with data and insight as to the mechanisms and magnitude of change. Researchers involved in this project began gathering vegetation data using point framing methodology in 1989-1990 at two 1 km2 grids located at Imnavait Creek and Toolik Lake Alaska, and at two experimental sites (moist and dry tundra) at Toolik Lake Alaska.

The opporutnity is to help develop peer-reviewed manuscripts on vegetation response to changing climate based on long term datasets (1989 to 2018) from northern Alaska and compile, document, and archive data used in these analyses. Data includes vegetation composition and structure collected using point frame methodology from the Toolik Lake ITEX moist and dry experimental sites.

Learning Objectives: The participant will have an opportunity to engage with a global network of researchers involved in studies throughout the Circumpolar Arctic region. They will gain experience in data management and analyses, and in writing peer reviewed research. Additionally, the participant will have an opportunity to develop communications translating research results to more general language for press releases and other communications.

Mentor: The mentor for this opportunity is William Gould (william.a.gould@usda.gov). If you have questions about the nature of the research, please contact the mentor.

Anticipated Appointment Start Date: March 2025.  Start date is flexible and will depend on a variety of factors.

Appointment Length: The appointment will initially be for seven months but may be extended upon recommendation of USDA Forest Service and is contingent on the availability of funds.

Level of Participation: The appointment is part time.

Participant Stipend: The participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience. The anticipated stipend will be $2,400/month for 20 hours per week with a research and travel budget up to $3,000.

Citizenship Requirements: This opportunity is available to U.S. citizens only.

Description

*Applications will be reviewed on a rolling-basis.

NOAA Office/Lab and Location: A research opportunity is currently available with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), National Ocean Service (NOS), National Centers for Coastal Ocean Science (NCCOS), Stressor Detection and Impacts Division (SDI), Harmful Algal Bloom (HAB) Forecasting Branch located in Kodiak, Alaska. The opportunity is located in Kodiak, Alaska.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) formed the National Centers for Coastal Ocean Science (NCCOS) in 1999 as the focal point for NOAA’s coastal ocean science efforts. NCCOS uses cutting-edge research and high-tech instrumentation to provide citizens, coastal managers, public health officials, and other decision makers with reliable information needed to determine how best to protect environmental resources and public health, preserve valued habitats, and improve the way communities interact with coastal ecosystems. The NCCOS is headquartered in Silver Spring, MD but also has research labs across the nation. The NCCOS also has many assets including research programs, vessels, satellites, science centers, laboratories, and a vast pool of distinguished scientists and experts.

The HAB-F Branch delivers near real-time forecasting products for predicting the intensity/severity, location, and the potential health risk HABs pose in the Great Lakes and coastal regions of the U.S. While national in scope, forecasting efforts and products address regional needs and specific HAB species. The product sets are intended to support coastal resource managers, public health officials, researchers, and the public.

Research Project: Under the guidance of a technical mentor, the selected participant will gain experience in various research activities including performing and otherwise supporting collection of field data, including use of oceanographic monitoring instruments, collection of water, sediment and/or tissue samples and other activities. As well as conducting laboratory studies including toxin analysis, microscopy, molecular methods development and validation, and data analytics. This opportunity will also include engagement with, and training of, stakeholders in Alaska as well as generating outreach materials and technical documentation.

The specific project includes supporting ongoing research efforts in Alaska in support of HAB forecast development. Alaska experiences annual blooms of the toxic dinoflagellate Alexandrium catenella, as well as other HAB species that can cause shellfish toxicity and vector toxins through the marine food web. There is a need for better monitoring and HAB forecasting products to help mitigate these blooms but much of Alaska is lacking in environmental monitoring data to support a HAB forecasting effort. The overarching goal of this project is to learn about data collection for HAB monitoring, and to help support forecasting data collection to mitigate the impacts of such blooms. This will involve collaborating with a variety of NOAA partners and interacting with stakeholders to support data collection from water, plankton and other biota, collection of environmental data with oceanographic sensors, and supporting laboratory processing of samples for analysis.

Learning Objectives: The fellow will:

  • Develop an understanding of Alexandrium blooms, the cause of paralytic shellfish poisoning in Alaska.
  • Gain familiarity in keeping field data records and collection of data with oceanographic instruments.
  • Gain familiarity with collection of seawater, plankton, fish and invertebrates for microscopy and toxin analysis.
  • Gain familiarity with processing samples of seawater, plankton, sediment and biota for analysis.
  • Gain experience collaborating with diverse sets of partners and stakeholders.
  • Learn about HAB-F capabilities in monitoring and modeling, including exposure to hydrographic and other field data, and maintaining laboratory and field records.
Mentor: The mentor for this opportunity is Steven Kibler (steve.kibler@noaa.gov), with co-mentor Julie Matweyou (jamatweyou@alaska.edu). If you have questions about the nature of the research, please contact the mentor(s).

Anticipated Appointment Start Date: April 2025.  Start date is flexible and will depend on a variety of factors.

Appointment Length: The appointment will initially be until September 30, 2025, but may be renewed upon recommendation of NOAA and is contingent on the availability of funds.

Assistant Professor and Extension Specialist - Wildlife Management
Department of Rangeland, Wildlife, and Fisheries Management
Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service
Texas A&M University

POSITION:
The Department of Rangeland, Wildlife, and Fisheries Management (RWFM) and its extension unit are pleased to invite applications for an Assistant Professor and Extension Specialist – Wildlife Management position. The department addresses practical issues affecting rangelands, wildlife, and fisheries management through applied science.  We are eager to add another outstanding individual to our growing extension unit. This is a non-tenure-track appointment with 100% Extension responsibilities, but there will be ample opportunities to collaborate with our teaching and research faculty on topics of common interest. Review of applications will begin immediately.
Position will be open until filled.

GENERAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: The successful applicant will be expected to build a program in their area of expertise, but there is a need to mitigate agricultural damage caused by wildlife, including predators and especially invasive animals like feral swine. Collaboration with and support of county extension agents and other Extension colleagues is required, and reciprocal support can help specialists understand local needs and establish relationships with private landowners. A demonstrated ability to work with private landowners, state and federal agencies, and other relevant partners in a collaborative and collegial manner is essential to the success of this position. The incumbent will develop a nationally recognized Extension program focusing within their area of expertise while incorporating the management of predators, effective control approaches and strategies that reduce agricultural damages.

The development and leadership of an independent and extramurally funded program is imperative as this person establishes their program and later advances through the academic ranks. Given the outward-facing nature of Extension, this position will be located off campus at the Stephenville AgriLife Research and Extension Center. There are many options to collaborate with state and federal agencies (e.g. APHIS/TWS, TPWD, USFWS), NGOs (East Foundation, Welder Wildlife Foundation), regional universities (TAMU-Kingsville, Sul Ross State University), and other entities across Texas to achieve common wildlife management goals. The candidate would be expected to build relationships with groups like these and with other surrounding states that may be dealing with similar challenges in wildlife conservation.

REQUIREMENTS: Ph.D. in Wildlife Management, Ecology, Conservation or related field is required. Evidence of applied research and translating results relevant to private and public stakeholders is preferred.

RESOURCES: The successful candidate will be offered a competitive salary, a startup package, and access to facilities and real properties associated with the Department of Rangeland, Wildlife and Fisheries Management, Texas A&M AgriLife, and the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences within Texas A&M University. The Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service is a State of Texas agency in the Texas A&M University System (TAMUS) and boasts many high-quality academic and agency units conducting Extension education and research in areas of natural resources conservation and management. Apply at https://tamus.wd1.myworkdayjobs.com/AgriLife_Extension_External/job/Stephenville-TX/Assistant-Professor---Extension-Specialist---Wildlife-Management_R-079303

APPLICATION PROCESS: Applicants must submit: (1) a cover letter of interest, (2) detailed curriculum vitae, (3) no more than a two-page statement of an Extension/applied research plan, (4) a transcript of all course work (unofficial) and (5) contact information for three professional references who can provide a critical evaluation of the applicant’s qualifications.
