Description
Interested in Fishery Sustainability, Management and Hands on Marine Biology Work? Become a Fisheries Observer!!

A.I.S., Inc. (AIS) is a national scientific services firm supporting maritime activities requiring certification of compliance with environmental regulations as well as collecting data for use by Federal, State, Municipal, and other government agencies along the US coastline. AIS is recruiting Reef Fish and Shrimp Fisheries Observers to work at sea collecting and recording data and biological samples for the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) Southeast Fisheries Science Center (SEFCS) aboard commercial fishing vessels.

The primary goals of the governments shrimp and reef fish observer programs are to provide quantitative biological, vessel, and gear-selectivity information for the southeastern shrimp fishery and Gulf of Mexico reef fish fishery. Observers deploy on commercial shrimp and reef fish vessels operating in the Gulf of Mexico and South Atlantic. If you ever wanted to make a difference, this is how.

Commercial fishing dates back hundreds of years. Today commercial fishing continues to be possible due to cooperation between the fishing industry and fisheries scientists like yourself. In order to facilitate cooperation, fisheries observers collect data pertaining to fishing programs, economics, catch data, and fishing efficiency. Collected data is used to document stock information which is then used to protect the environment and preserve future generations of fish/fishermen. Commit to the journey!

Observers’ record detailed information on the gear and fishing activity of the vessels. Observers work on deck on vessels ranging from 30’ to 90’ on trips roughly ranging from 1 to 45 days collecting data on fish catch and bycatch, and incidental takes such as marine mammals, seabirds and marine turtles. Currently the three-week paid training class will be in person instruction in Galveston, TX. Following training observers are deployed from ports throughout the Gulf of Mexico and southern Atlantic states. Gear types include but are not limited to: shrimp trawl, bottom longline, modified buoy gear, bandit reel, and handline.

Training includes instructions on sampling protocols, gear, fisheries, fish identification, marine mammal/sea turtle identification, and safety. Training projected for July / August timeframe.

This is a challenging job and candidates must be mentally prepared to be away from home without access to internet or cellular telephone signal for multiple days and often weeks at a time. Candidates must be physically able to handle heavy lifting, working odd hours, and spending long days in rough seas. Many crews speak limited English compounding the effects of loneliness and isolation on long trips. Observing provides an excellent career in marine biology, as observers are widely recognized as being excellent field biologists. A broad range of advancement opportunities are available to those who demonstrate appropriate capabilities. Those opportunities include, but are not limited to, project management, field supervisors, and fieldwork in other programs.

Compensation: Observers will be paid an hourly rate to be negotiated and total compensation will vary depending on employee’s availability and fishing effort AIS benefits package includes health and dental insurance, vacation, sick and holiday benefits.

Potential additional compensation consists of performance incentives, service awards, fitness center reimbursement, and referral bonus.

Travel is reimbursed in accordance with federal travel guidelines at an hourly rate along with compensation for miles accrued on a personal vehicle as well as per diem at the specified Government rate.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with a major in one of the natural sciences and a minimum of 30 semester hours or equivalent in the biological sciences
  • At least one undergraduate course in math or statistics.
  • All relevant course work must have been performed at a level acceptable for credit at the candidate’s academic institution.
  • Experience with data entry on computers.
  • Observer candidates must be U.S. citizens, or be legally authorized to work in the U.S.
  • Candidates must be physically able, as determined by a licensed physician’s certification to perform observer duties.

An Internship at WRR is a great starting point for individuals with an educational background or currently enrolled at a university but lack substantial experience working with wildlife. Interns will grow in their knowledge of native and non-native Texas wildlife, including natural history, behavior, and environmental enrichment, and they will gain valuable experience in facility cleanliness and operation standards. If you want to pursue a career in animal care or nature rehabilitation, this is a great opportunity. WRR is a wellestablished, non-profit organization that rescues and rehabilitates approximately 11,000 animals annually. All Internships with WRR are unpaid, and limited housing is available on a first-come, first-serve basis.

An Internship begins with the Rehabilitation hospital and involves working with a variety of native Texas wildlife. The species we receive in Rehabilitation varies depending on the time of year. Essential Intern duties include feeding, cleaning, and daily observation and monitoring of animals in the Rehabilitation hospital. Other duties may include performing animal rescues and releases and assisting with various projects at the facility.

After completing three months and a performance evaluation, Interns will receive training in the Above the Gate Sanctuary from Sanctuary staff and the Intern supervisor. The Above Sanctuary is home to many species of farmed and non-native animals. Interns will work closely with donkeys, cows, pigs, goats, and sheep. Other species may include non-native birds, reptiles, and domestic cats. Interns trained and approved to work in the Above Sanctuary will increase their assigned duties, including preparing diets for the Sanctuary residents, constructing and distributing enrichment to Sanctuary residents, and cleaning and general animal care duties. Interns will also participate in project and shadow shifts.

All Internships at WRR involve considerable physical labor; applicants must be able to lift 50 pounds and work in various weather conditions with variable hours. Desired candidates are mature, reliable, and responsible individuals who can work independently and as part of a group. They also can handle physically and emotionally stressful situations, a demanding workload with long hours, and commit to the entire term of the Internship.

Description
COURSE DESCRIPTION
Distance sampling is a frequently used method for estimating species abundance using point counts and line transects while accounting for imperfect detection. This method is based on the simple premise that animals on or near the sampling point/line transect are more likely to be detected than animals further away. This method can be implemented on unmarked animals during a single site visit, which can be appealing compared to other approaches that require marked animals or multiple site visits (i.e., temporal replicates). Users can, however, incorporate marked animals and/or collect data with temporal replication to address questions about availability, seasonal change, and annual trends. Distance sampling can be implemented on the ground (e.g., foot, vehicle), by air (e.g., airplane, helicopter), and by water (e.g., ship, raft), and therefore useful in terrestrial, aquatic, and marine ecosystems. This course will provide a foundation in distance sampling with numerous examples of their use. Students will gain practical experience in distance sampling, including study design, data collection, data management, and analytical techniques. Analyses will be conducted in R using the unmarked package. Students will be able to implement these models, interpret their output, and summarize the results.

Description
COURSE DESCRIPTION
Prepare yourself for a career applying and/or interpreting ‘multivariate’ analysis methods, which are used on datasets with multiple response variables (such as many different species, traits, habitat conditions, genomic information, etc.).  This course helps you identify the ecological and statistical properties of multivariate responses, demonstrates how to summarize and graph data to reveal those properties, explains which distance measures will do the best job capturing the patterns among your responses, discusses the consequences of modifying or failing to modify data when needed, introduces the most common multivariate analyses applicable to ecological datasets, describes ordination and how to interpret ordination diagrams, and takes you through a ten-step process for performing, interpreting, and communicating defensible analyses for five different types of guided ordination (WA, PO, CCA, RDA, and FSO).  MECA I is the first part in a two-part series (MECA II builds upon MECA I to cover an additional 18 free ordination, classification, group testing, association assessment, and trait analysis tools).
